Appalachian State Mountaineers Betting Preview: Continued Success on Offense?

The App State Mountaineers have taken care of business twice already by taking down the likes of Charlotte and Lindenwood at home.

However, they're receiving quite a bit of respect from the market as they travel to Hattiesburg this Saturday.

This matchup will be a test for the Mountaineers, who have looked solid offensively (sixth in yards per game and 16th in seconds per play).

Former SEC prospect AJ Swann has looked explosive through the air and faces a Southern Miss secondary that ranks 86th in yards per pass allowed and 124th in opponent completion percentage.

It doesn't stop there, though, as the Golden Eagles have also not shown much resistance to the ground game, sitting 91st in yards per rush allowed.

With numbers like these, it's no surprise the Golden Eagles' defense can't get off the field, ranking 124th in third-down conversion rate.

All of this points to continued offensive success for the Mountaineers in this matchup.

Southern Miss Golden Eagles Betting Preview: Defense Has Struggled

As for the Golden Eagles, we've already discussed how their defense has struggled. Their offense isn't far behind, though.

Despite beating Jackson State last week, Southern Miss has shown no explosiveness offensively, ranking 108th in yards per play.

The Golden Eagles face an App State defense that's been solid all around, ranking 15th in opponent completion percentage and 20th in yards per rush allowed.

However, it remains to be seen if Southern Miss quarterback Braylon Braxton can build on last week's performance, as the Mountaineers have generated very little pass rush.

App State vs Southern Miss Pick, Betting Analysis

Early in the week, the market bounced back and forth between these two sides — until a big move pushed the Mountaineers out to clear favorites.

While the best number may be gone, there's still value in backing App State to win this outright.

The Mountaineers' offense should have little issue moving the ball and App State has the opportunity to dictate this game. If it can keep Southern Miss from completing downfield passes, it should be able to extend its lead quickly.

Pick: App State ML -145
