Arizona State Sun Devils Betting Preview

When it comes to betting, take Week 1 results with a grain of salt. Arizona State, for example, had no issues moving the ball on Morgan State, routing the Bears, 70-7.

This was a dominant performance from the Sun Devils at first glance, yet it raised serious red flags when digging even deeper into the box score.

The primary concern is their defense, a group that couldn't create disruptions at any level of the field while plummeting down to 106th in Havoc. Their lack of pressure was alarming.

They now face off against an offense that can actually hold its ground in the trenches and pick apart the gaps in coverage.

Not only did the Sun Devils allow Morgan State to keep a clean sheet, but their front seven shockingly struggled to contain their run game.

While their secondary fared far better, the Sun Devils will need to quickly patch their interior if they want to hold their opponents to hard stops.

While their defense underperformed, the Sun Devils faced minimal resistance in their efforts to move the ball down the field, taking advantage of a Bears' defense that was simply outmatched at every position.

Cutter Boley was dominant through the air in his debut, throwing for 387 yards and six touchdowns while completing 77.77% of his passes.

Texas A&M Aggies Betting Preview

Heading into the year, question marks lingered over Texas A&M after losing key pieces across its offensive line.

In the season opener against Missouri State, Marcel Reed had no issue operating behind his re-tooled front five, leading the Aggies to a top-20 finish in success rate while throwing for 233 yards and two touchdowns.

Even though Reed was able to stay ahead of the sticks, the Aggies' lack of big plays was troublesome, falling down to 104th in offensive explosiveness.

Texas A&M’s ground game mirrored Reed’s performance through the air, ranking 16th in rush success rate while nearly falling outside of the top 100 in rush explosiveness.

When matched up against a bigger and stronger defensive line, their running backs will be bottled up in the trenches, potentially stalling out their offense.

On the other side of the ball, the Aggies were efficient at all three levels of the field, ranking near the top of the board in defensive success rate and finishing drives.

Every ounce of their production on defense will be needed to slow down Boley, especially if their offense continues to sputter. That makes it vital that they hold the Sun Devils out of scoring position to avoid falling too far behind.

Arizona St vs Texas A&M Pick, Betting Analysis

Fortunately for Texas A&M, Arizona State’s inability to stop the run will make it easier for its running backs to create explosive plays on the ground, forcing the Sun Devils' corners to cheat to the middle in an attempt to slow them down.

Once in the box, the width of Reed’s passing lanes on the outside will widen, increasing his chances of connecting with his wideouts.

When inside the 40, the Aggies will have a great opportunity to turn their scoring opportunities into points on the board, attacking a front seven that ranks 95th in defensive rush finishing drives.

Keeping the ball on the ground will also negate the possibility of Reed generating a turnover worthy play, avoiding making a costly mistake near the goal line.

Speaking of turnover worthy plays, the Aggies' high rate of havoc on defense will make the Sun Devils vulnerable to committing a turnover, setting up their own offense with generous field positioning.

By turning their turnovers into quick scores, the Aggies will also be able to stop the clock from draining, leading to an uptick in their total number of possessions.

With Texas A&M’s team total ranging from 31.5 to 33.5, it’s key you bet the over at no higher than 32, locking in a key number. The Aggies spread is also worth monitoring, putting them in play for a separate wager should they steam down to a flat -14.

Pick: Texas A&M Team Total Over 31.5
