Bucknell Bison Betting Preview

Bucknell has struggled this season, entering this game at just 1-3, with their lone victory coming against VMI a couple of weeks back. The offense hasn't scored more than two touchdowns in any game this season while averaging 12.7 points and just 239 yards per game.

Quarterback Christopher Dietrich had big shoes to fill taking over for Ralph Rucker IV, and while he's completed 64.5% of his passes, the lack of downfield explosiveness is completely absent for the Bison offense.

Bucknell played its backup QB — Emmett Dowling — last week against Penn, and he struggled, completing just eight passes for 76 yards.

The Bison have struggled to run the football, averaging just 63 yards per game and 2.4 yards per attempt. Michael Cadden is the team’s leading rusher with just 147 yards on the ground this season, and as a team, just one of Bucknell’s 106 rushing attempts has surpassed 20 yards.

The offensive line has been poor in both run blocking and pass protection, and 18 negative plays have been allowed, including seven sacks. Given the strength of the opponents faced, the performance has not been good.

The Pitt Panthers should live in the Bucknell backfield in this game.

The defense has played a little better this season than prior renditions of the Bucknell stop-unit, which required the Bison to win shootout-type games. But once again, the competition has to be considered.

Richmond shredded this defense while racing out to a 28-0 lead, and Villanova spent all offseason prepping to play with a different quarterback only to find Pat McQuaide eligible at the 11th hour.

VMI and Penn have new offensive schemes and sub-par quarterback play, so it's really hard to buy into how tough this defense actually is. PFF grades the pass rush as one of the five worst at the FCS level, and Bucknell is a poor tackling team.

Pittsburgh should find offensive success in this game.

Pitt Panthers Betting Preview

Pitt is coming off extra rest after defeating Syracuse, 27-13, on September 17.

After throwing for 480 yards in the season opener against Miami (OH) and playing UCF in a weather-affected slog fest, quarterback Mason Heintschel struggled last week against the Orange.

Cataurus Hicks, Bryce Yates and Censere Lee have been reliable receiving options and provide the explosiveness in the pass game that I believe we'll see this week.

Seven players have caught five or more passes this season, and Pittsburgh should be able to throw the ball on this Bucknell secondary however it wants to.

Pat Narduzzi stressed getting the timing down in the passing game and getting reps in with multiple different players this week in practice. Expect the passing game to be dialed in this week.

The defense has been outstanding this season, particularly against the run. Pitt is allowing just 60.7 yards per game and 2.2 yards per rush this season. Of the 81 rushing attempts against this defense, one has gone for longer than 20 yards.

Pitt grades out as one of the best run defenses in the country, per PFF advanced stats, and the pass rush has also been strong.

The Panthers have registered eight sacks and 20 tackles-for-loss through their first three games.

This defense is going to show out on Saturday against a weak Bucknell offensive line.

Bucknell vs Pitt Pick, Betting Analysis

This game opened with Pitt listed as 49.5-point favorites in the contest, with a total that was set at 58.5. Pitt has been bet up to 52.5-point favorites, with the total currently sitting at 61.5. I'm going to take the over in this matchup.

Pitt is completely capable of blowing the doors off of Bucknell, and the lack of offensive execution shown during the last two weeks hasn't sat well with the coaching staff.

The Panthers put up 646 yards and 59 points in the season opener against Miami of Ohio, and this offense is going to score early and often against Bucknell.

Pitt wants to run tempo, and we could see 80 plays or more from the Panthers in this game. A lack of explosive plays in the last couple of games will be a thing of the past as the Bucknell pass rush will not be effective, and the coverage unit will not hold up well enough to prevent connections through the air.

Heintschel will be very efficient in this game, and I would expect several touchdown passes in the first half. The ground game should gash the Bucknell front, and Pitt will be able to convert on third down and in the red zone at a high level.

Bucknell isn't going to be able to run the ball at all in this matchup, and the Bison are converting on third down on just 22% of attempts this season.

There's just so little chance this team is able to sustain possession of the ball or accrue first downs, so quick possessions are expected, and I would expect short fields for Pitt, which will pile on the points quickly.

Pitt’s last five games involving FCS opponents have averaged 73 points per game, with four of these matchups easily clearing this total.

Expect points in this matchup, so take the over.

Pick: Over 61.5 (Play to 65)
