Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Betting Preview

Coastal Carolina brings the opposite problem. The Chanticleers' defense has been one of the weakest against the run in the country, allowing roughly 190 yards a game on the ground through six games, which is the matchup Georgia State wants.

They come in off a bye after a 35-32 loss to Appalachian State, a game that followed a 27-21 win at Marshall and a one-score loss to Georgia Southern, and four of their five losses have come by a single score.

Their offense has averaged about 26 points per game this season. If Georgia State leans on its backs, as it should against this run defense, the game is likely to be played in long drives and short possessions for the visitor.

Georgia State Panthers Betting Preview

Georgia State is built to win this kind of game on the ground. The Panthers lean on a run game that was averaging better than 200 yards a game before last week, with Lanear McCrary Jr. as the lead back and Qwantavius Wiggins adding big-play ability, including a 77-yard touchdown run at Arkansas State.

The last two weeks have been a rough stretch, with road losses at James Madison (49-22) and Arkansas State (38-32) after a win over Old Dominion. Cameran Brown, who threw for 134 yards against the Dukes, is listed as questionable, and in Jonesboro Pereira threw for 163 yards to Brown's 65.

Coming home to Atlanta, a favorite of about six points with a defined identity, the Panthers can get back to a ball-control approach that keeps the clock moving.

Coastal Carolina vs Georgia State Pick, Betting Analysis

This is a good fit for the "Home Fave Unders" system:

The system targets regular-season games where the home team is favored by between 2.5 and 19.5 points, and Georgia State, at roughly -6, sits comfortably in that window. The idea is that a home favorite with the better of the matchup manages the pace and protects the lead rather than pushing for every point, which is the profile of a Panthers team that wants to run against Coastal's defense and shorten the game.

The total has also moved the right way, opening at 58.5 and settling at 57.5, and the betting market agrees with the system's direction, with 68% of the bets and 80% of the money on the under.

The recent numbers back up the price. Six of Coastal Carolina's seven games this season have finished with fewer than 57.5 combined points, including a 31-24 loss to West Virginia, a 22-14 loss at Delaware and a 27-21 win at Marshall, and the Chanticleers are scoring about 26 a game. A Georgia State offense that controls the clock gets Coastal into a similar range, and a 31-24 type result would sail under this number.

The weather helps too. Wind is forecast at 9.8 mph, enough to take something off the passing and kicking games, and humidity is expected to sit in the high 30s to low 40s through the afternoon and in the 40s by early evening, right around the system's 40% mark, with temperatures only in the upper 50s.

The risk is that both defenses can leak. Georgia State's last two games produced 71 and 70 combined points, Coastal's loss to Appalachian State went for 67, and four of the last five meetings between these teams have gone over, including Coastal's 40-27 win last season.

A couple of early turnovers or a pair of special teams plays could push this into the 60s, but at a number that sits above what Coastal's games have typically produced, and with the home favorite leaning on its run game, the under is the better side.

Pick: Under 57.5
