Stanford vs Louisville NCAAF Preview
Stanford Cardinal Betting Preview
In Year 1, Tavita Pritchard has done a pretty good job making Stanford a semi-competitive team again. Its 4-4 record is the best mark post-September since 2018 (COVID-19 season in 2020 removed).
This past week, the Cardinal pulled off a 31-28 upset over NC State (+7.5), and their four wins match last year's total — again, the best mark since 2018.
But the quality of the wins is fair to question. Stanford notched wins over Hawaii, Georgia Tech, Elon and NC State — teams with a combined 11-19 record and the only one at or above .500 plays in the CAA (Elon).
All four wins came at home, and Stanford's 0-3 road record comes with a -133 point margin (-43 average point margin in losses).
In the home stretch, Stanford will find the middle ground against a soft home schedule (sans Miami) and an impossibly difficult road schedule (combined 17-4 record).
Running back Micah Ford remains the least efficient top option on offense in the country. His 136 attempts rank 12th in the country, but his 679 yards fall outside the top 20.
Stanford sits 120th in Success Rate, 116th in Points Per Drive, and 111th in drives ending in touchdowns (22.4%). When Stanford's offensive line is overwhelmed, Ford can't move the ball, and Stanford's offense hasn't scored more than seven points.
The defense is one of the worst among power conference teams. It allows a touchdown on 45.3% of drives, the most among power conference programs and the third-most in the entire country (behind only Colorado State and NIU).
Even in wins against FBS teams, the Cardinal defense reels. Quarterback Davis Warren has been bailing the team out late in the game. In its three FBS wins, Stanford allows about 27 points per game.
To travel with this liability of a defense and an offense reliant on a drudging back spells disaster for Stanford's next three games, all on the road.
Louisville Cardinals Betting Preview
Louisville followed back-to-back losses up with back-to-back wins to head into the bye week on a positive note.
Quarterback Lincoln Kienholz and the offense have been delightful, ranking No. 18 in Adjusted EPA Per Play, No. 21 in Points Per Drive and No. 16 in touchdown rate (43.9%).
A backfield of Kienholz, Isaac Brown and Keyjuan Brown (all of whom have dealt with occasional injuries) has produced the country's most explosive and efficient run game.
The offensive line doesn't get enough credit for its performance against a tough slate of opponents including Ole Miss, SMUÂ and Wake Forest.
Both Browns make it easy to run for 5.7 yards per carry as a team (tops in college football), but the line has had to face monstrous defensive fronts.
Of course, the conversation really comes down to defense and Louisville's lack thereof. Though the Cards rank 31st in Adjusted EPA Per Play, they've also allowed 30-plus in four of their seven games and 20-plus in all of their FBS games.
Again, the competition is stiff — all but one is inside the top 50 in Points Per Drive, and three of the six are inside the top 25 — but Louisville's defense bleeds big plays.
The schedule clears up nicely until the final week at Kentucky, so these numbers should improve. Stanford, Georgia Tech and Pitt all field dreadful offenses in their current iteration, and North Carolina relies on a stiff defense to win games.
But this tendency to give up big plays isn't a 2026 fad. Louisville has given up explosive plays for as long as offensive-minded Jeff Brohm has been in town.

Stanford vs Louisville NCAAF Picks to Bet
Stanford finds itself in a tricky spot. It hits the road for the third time in October, plays its second straight ACC foe with a rest advantage, and must figure out a way to follow up its upset of NC State that ended the Dave Doeren era.
Louisville has a super rest advantage, playing this game both off a bye and at home.
These West Coast ACC teams have proven to tire at the end of the season as travel fatigue catches up. Stanford has yet to win a road game after September since joining the ACC.
Stanford's offense isn't built to travel, and it isn't built to beat this Louisville defense.
Against defenses with a pulse, the Cardinal haven't scored more than seven points yet this year. They haven't scored more than 10 on the road since Week 4 last year and haven't won a road game since Week 3 in 2024.
The Cardinal have returned most of their hurt linemen except center Aidan Kilstrom (who may not play again this year after getting hurt in Week 0), but even the full-strength Stanford offensive front isn't good enough to move bodies like Clev Lubin and Tyler Thompson.
Against its second straight fresh team and on the road, I don't expect Stanford to piece together at least three scoring drives.
Pick: Stanford Team Total Under 17.5 or Better
