Coastal Carolina Chanticleers
The Chanticleers are led by first-year HC Ryan Beard, who was hired this past offseason after leading Morgan State to seven wins in just the program’s first season playing in the FBS.
For a team that has really fallen off since Jamey Chadwell posted a 65% winning percentage during his time as head coach, Beard was brought in to completely rebuild a program that has posted a sub .500 overall record since.
Though there will be a distinct difference between the two coaches’ respective styles, Beard is far more defensive-minded, as he previously served as defensive coordinator at Morgan State before being promoted within.
It is the Chanticleers' offense that really has me worried, with Beard yet to select a starting QB just days ahead of the opener.
Whether it be JUCO prospect Tre Guerra or Deuce Bailey — who followed Beard from Morgan State — Coastal is expected to run a spread offense.
The Chanticleers bring back both of their two premier wideouts from 2025 in Tristian Gardner and Robby Washington, who will have to play a substantial role in a new-look Coastal Carolina offense.
Coastal also brought back both of its tailbacks from last season, with Dominic Knicely and Jevon Edwards in a position battle to start as RB1.
Rice transfer and former track star Daelen Alexander was another great halfback addition in the portal. His shiftiness and breakaway speed could result in him seeing plenty of reps in the backfield, as well.
Unfortunately for Beard’s loaded backfield, Coastal Carolina brings back zero players from last season’s starting offensive line, which could surely be problematic, especially with a ton of new faces learning the ins and outs of new offensive schematics.
Despite surrendering over 33 points per game in 2025, Beard is a defensive specialist who will undoubtedly prioritize the team’s ability to make stops and contain chunk-yardage plays.
Ironically, Coastal’s premier defender from last season — Zeke Durham-Campbell, who led the team in sacks in 2025 — transferred to West Virginia in the offseason.
Despite Beard’s defensive-minded prowess, I expect it to take several weeks until we actually see meaningful improvements for this Chanticleers defensive unit.
West Virginia Mountaineers
In Rich Rodriguez’s first season at the helm, the Mountaineers finished with just a 4-8 overall record.
Rodriguez has largely been praised for a very effective offseason that resulted in a ton of talent being influx into Morgantown. In total, he brought in a whopping 43 transfer portal additions.
The most notable of those additions was former Oklahoma QB Michael Hawkins Jr., who, while it has yet to be confirmed officially, is expected to assume his role as starting QB.
While Hawkins’ reps in Norman were quite limited up until starting QB John Mateer’s injury, he took advantage of his opportunity, which resulted in him being a hot commodity in the portal.
Hawkins has a lot of work to do in order to improve, especially on an offense that ranked second-to-last in the entire Big 12 in 2025 in total yardage. Fortunately, he'll get a ton of assistance from Jacksonville State transfer RB Cam Cook, who's expected to lead the Mountaineers' backfield this season.
In 2025, Cook rushed for 1,659 yards and scored 16 TDs in the process, which will be a deadly combination when paired with Hawkins' running ability.
Rodriguez’s bunch also brings a very experienced defense into the season, with an absolutely loaded defensive line featuring Durham-Campbell, who actually played for the Chanticleers last year and racked up 38 pressures, 21 hurries and 12 QB hits.
I also expect edge rusher Harper Holloman to have a massive season for this Mountaineers defense, as he is far and away the best passing rushing threat on the defensive unit.
Rodriguez’s defense is stacked, with both OLB Cam Torbor and Nickel/SAM Geimere Latimer II adding even more versatility and athleticism to this Mountaineer bunch.
West Virginia’s secondary is quite impressive as well, featuring the likes of CB Chams Diagne and safety Kamari Wilson.
Coastal Carolina vs West Virginia Pick, Betting Analysis
West Virginia is clearly my preferred side in this spot, especially when you take into consideration the considerable changes made to improve every single aspect of this football team.
I am thrilled to watch this Mountaineers offense in action in what I suspect could be the most efficient offensive system since the Pat White/Steve Slaton era.
This is a prime home opener for this new-look West Virginia bunch, one that is looking to make a statement in front of its home crowd in Morgantown. I expect the Mountaineers to do just that.
I will be taking a shot on West Virginia to score 21 or more points in the first half of Saturday’s contest (with -125 juice).
