Fresno State vs San Jose State College Football Preview
Fresno State Bulldogs Betting Preview: Run 'Dogs, Run
Fresno State rebounded nicely after a horrific Week 1 showing at USC, as it looked strong at home against Sacramento State last week.
The defense thwarted every Hornet attempt to move the football, while the offense found explosiveness through the air and on the ground.
Quarterback Jayden Mandal threw the ball very well, completing 23-of-26 passes for 316 yards with a pair of passing touchdowns.
The rushing offense was efficient, with Bryson Donelson rushing for 102 yards.
Matt Entz continues to employ his physical brand of power running at Fresno State, so expect a concerted effort to run the football in this game.
Fresno State has a good defense, and its defensive coordinator — Nick Benedetto — is an excellent game-plan creator. Benedetto and this defense had answers for everything Sacramento State tried to do offensively.
While the sack and havoc numbers haven't been there, the Bulldogs will mix up their coverages and create problems for San Jose State.
Don't expect this game to be a back-and-forth shootout.
San Jose State Spartans Betting Preview: An Epic Defense
San Jose State has been one of the more impressive teams in the country this season. The Spartans were faded in preseason, their Week 0 and Week 1 spreads went against them, and their win total was bet down from 5.5 to 4.5 despite a 13-game regular-season schedule.
A pair of wins against Cal Poly and Eastern Michigan — along with an impressive showing against USC in their opener — have this team believing in head coach Ken Niumatalolo’s system.
The offense has been balanced with a near 50-50 run/pass split, and the ground game has been solid. Running back Jabari Bates has 319 yards on the ground, averaging 5.5 yards per carry, and QB Luke Weaver has also chipped in with 96 yards on the ground.
Weaver has been fully in command of the offense, throwing for 788 yards and eight touchdowns against just one interception.
The offense hasn't used as much tempo as we've been used to over the first two years in Niumatalolo's system, but there's an effectiveness that gives the Spartans a chance to compete in close games.
The defense has been remarkable, as San Jose State has been much tougher than expected. The Spartans didn't allow an explosive rushing play against USC and have allowed just one rush longer than 17 yards all season.
The front has registered six sacks and 13 tackles for a loss, and this group can make Fresno State work for success in this game.
We should see a slower-paced game with a lack of explosive plays for Fresno State’s offense in this one.

Fresno State vs San Jose State Pick, Betting Analysis
This line opened with Fresno State listed as 6.5-point favorites with a total set at 50.5.
Fresno State isn't going to get beat deep in the secondary, and San Jose State has to practice patience on offense to move the ball. Fresno State ranks 21st nationally in defensive success rate on passing downs and 18th in pass play explosiveness allowed.
Weaver has to take the underneath passes, and San Jose State must run the football to convert on third down, something the Spartans have struggled with this season.
San Jose State converts just 33% of its third downs and has punted 13 times already through three games. I don't anticipate this game having a high number of possessions, so forcing San Jose State punts will be critical for the Bulldogs.
Craig Stutzmann mentioned wanting to run the ball more as the offensive line has improved, so expect San Jose State to rush it a decent amount.
Again, the explosive plays should be at a minimum against Fresno State, so situational execution will have to be excellent, and up to this point in the season, it hasn’t been.
Fresno State is likely to be leading this game, and the Bulldogs will slow the pace with a conservative game plan late in an attempt to salt the game away. The Bulldogs want to run the ball and play power football, which they'll certainly attempt to do.
The quarterback play won't be as efficient as last week against Sacramento State, so a more concerted effort to get 4-5 yards at a time will result in long, time-consuming Fresno State drives.
Both offenses have settled for field goals while in the red zone, so don't be surprised to see 2-3 red zone field goals, further supporting a low-scoring game.
This spirited rivalry game is going to be a fun one to watch, and one where both defenses should impress in a lower-scoring game, leading us to the under.
Pick: Under 50.5
