Georgia State Panthers Betting Preview: Perfect Illusion

There are only so many times you can attempt to call a team on its bluff before acceptance starts to set in.

At 4-1, Georgia State has looked like a really good football team. It's immensely talented on offense behind QB Cameran Brown, but the defense has been perhaps the biggest surprise of the season, holding all non-power opponents to 17 or fewer points so far.

So in order to again call this team's bluff, Georgia State's strength of schedule ranks 120th, per ESPN's FPI. According to consensus power ratings (a blend of FPI, SP+, Sagarin, and a handful of other established models), Georgia State hasn't beaten an opponent ranked better than 109th nationally.

Surveying the list of opposing quarterbacks doesn't exactly piece together an All-American ballot.

But those wins haven't come by any fluke nature — Georgia State's four wins came by an average of 29 points with zero close calls.

Georgia State does two things well: it puts a lid on opposing passing offenses and gets to the opposing quarterback. Its 10.3% sack rate this season is ninth-best in the FBS, and even UCF QB Keyone Jenkins struggled so badly, he completed 7-of-17 passes for 86 yards.

The secondary is talented, albeit lightly challenged, and the defense should be taken seriously.

Brown has been a delight, topping his season with a six-touchdown, zero-interception outing against Old Dominion in Georgia State's last game.

The receiving corps is fairly deep, but offensive coordinator Hue Jackson continues to skew run despite the run being the abjectly worst part of the Georgia State offense (129th in rushing success rate).

Brown has the ability to carry a team like this to some pretty high heights, especially with a favorable schedule remaining.

James Madison Dukes Betting Preview: The Crown Still Fits

James Madison enters Week 7 undefeated (just one of nine teams remaining) but also off its worst game of the season. Paulson Stadium magic nearly struck again as Georgia Southern closed the gap late and made 20-10 and 27-17 leads feel unsafe.

JMU has played most of the season without starting QB JC Evans, who returned briefly to the field last week for the first time since Week 1.

In his place, Camden Coleman has led JMU to a top-35 offense in points per drive (11 touchdowns, one interception).

But it's been the rushing attack that's really led the way — George Pettaway leads the Sun Belt with 639 yards (6.7 per carry), while Nick Herman has proven to be an equally efficient complement.

On the flip side of rushing the ball effectively is taking away the run from opponents, and JMU has done just that. Its 36.4% rushing success rate allowed is 12th-best in the country, and it also excels in takeaways (10 is 22nd in the country).

Corner DJ Kelly (three interceptions) and safety Jayon Harvey (38 tackles, only four misses) are both playing at an all-conference caliber.

JMU has perhaps the most obvious route to the College Football Playoff.

Left on its schedule are zero teams inside the top 80 nationally in consensus power rating, and two of the three toughest games remaining — against Georgia State this week and Troy in two more weeks — are played in Harrisonburg.

At +290 to make the CFP, James Madison presents some serious value.

Georgia State vs JMU Pick, Betting Analysis

Bettors have set two clear resistance lines: James Madison -12 and Over 58. Throughout the life of this market, the line has moved around both sides of those numbers, though Action Network PRO tabs several sharp moves on Georgia State and the over (at various numbers).

Keep an eye on some possible wind at Bridgeforth Stadium on Saturday. Record highs in the eastern United States give way to seasonably cool temperatures from Friday into Saturday.

That kind of sweeping temperature and barometric pressure change brings some pretty strong winds from Michigan to North Carolina and everywhere in between. Sustained winds at kickoff only appear to be around 12-15 mph, but gusts could hit 25+.

I do believe regression is inbound for Georgia State at some point — the extent of that regression probably isn't so severe that we're looking at an inflated bottom-20 team, but Brown and the Panthers have really benefitted from a bad schedule.

James Madison is a significant step up in class.

UCF scored 44 on Georgia State with three short fields (<50 yards) and one long explosive play right out of the half. Brown played his worst game of the season in Orlando that day, throwing two of his four interceptions this season in that game.

I do believe in the Georgia State defense. It's sturdy in the secondary and serviceable against the run. It runs a methodical offensive pace and should be able to sustain some drives on the Dukes.

We've seen this JMU offense sputter at times. It's not a fade of the Dukes, just a bet under a pretty lofty team total against a decent defense.

Pick: James Madison Team Total Under 35.5 Points (-120 | Play to 35)
