Jacksonville State Gamecocks Betting Preview: Gamecocks in Mid-Season Form

Jacksonville State is one of the teams we've gotten an extended look at this season, as it already has played two games.

Week 0 was a shock to Jacksonville State and a statement to the college football world when North Dakota State rolled the Gamecocks, 33-7. Charles Kelly rallied the troops and led Jacksonville State to a resounding 49-7 win (handily covered -20.5) the next week.

So one game above expectation, one game below.

One of the preseason concerns I voiced was an over-reliance on QB Caden Creel after the nation's leading rusher, Cam Cook, left for West Virginia. Through two games, Creel is the leader in carries (19) with adequate, but not exciting, results.

What made his rushing ability so effective last year was the threat of Cook next to him. In 2025, Creel averaged 2.4 yards per carry before contact; this year, that number's dropped to 1.9 through two games (0.7 against NDSU).

With a mixed backfield, defenses can key in on Creel much more effectively.

Creel also already has two interceptions to his name, plus a ball was snapped past him for an NDSU touchdown. Overuse here directly leads to increased turnovers.

Fortunately, no defensive front on the schedule threatens quite like NDSU's. The trio of upcoming opponents includes Ohio (was overmatched by Nebraska, see below), Georgia Southern and Middle Tennessee State.

The jury's still out defensively. NDSU can match up with almost any non-power team at the line of scrimmage — and probably most power-conference teams — and it was simply a mismatch for Jacksonville State's defensive front.

However, tackling was an issue, as the Gamecocks missed 14 in Week 0, and Eastern Kentucky managed to sneak in a few big plays on the ground.

Ohio Bobcats Betting Preview: Bobcats Looking to Build

Losing a player like Parker Navarro could spell death for many programs, but not Ohio U. For decades, Ohio has been as consistent as anyone — it's suffered only one losing season since 2009 and two losing seasons since Frank Solich's debut season.

Senior Nick Poulos stepped in Week 1 and led the team in both passing (164 yards) and rushing (70 yards). Most importantly, he kept his Bobcats in the game with Nebraska until late.

Receiver Riley Neer appears to be the clear No. 1 and a player capable of filling some of the gap left by 1,000-yard receiver Chase Hendricks (Cal). Neer was targeted 12 times and ripped off a 68-yard gain on the first play of the game and later was rewarded with a four-yard touchdown.

But most impressive was the Bobcat defense. They held Nebraska to 14 until four minutes remained in the third quarter, when the Huskers broke away late.

It was a terrific effort, but Nebraska's depth helped it pull away and cover its tracks. For much of this game, Ohio controlled the pace and held on to a 50% win expectancy.

Keep an eye on redshirt freshman Ike Ackerman, who logged a pair of sacks and three run stops in the game against his home-state team (Ackerman hails from Omaha). He closed last year strong, forcing a fumble and recording a sack in Ohio's bowl game, as well.

Peden Stadium is a terrific facility that routinely sells out and gives Ohio a major home-field boost. Since 2016, Ohio is 43-13 at home and is currently on a 23-1 run since 2022 (6-0 in three of the last four seasons!).

Jacksonville State vs Ohio Pick, Betting Analysis

Ohio opened a -1.5 favorite and that moved to -2.5, which appears to be a resistance point (at least, early on). As limits rise, watch where this line goes. If it doesn't breach Ohio -3, there's a significant reason behind it (being that there's enough respected action on Jacksonville State to prevent that number from appearing).

Between these two teams, there were 17 one-score affairs last year. Between the run-heavy schemes and lean on the defensive front, I expect more one-score games this year.

Instead, I'm looking to the total, which has moved quite a bit throughout the week. You could buy under 52 (for about four minutes, a head-fake) and over 49.5, depending on when you got in the market. Move fast, and you've got a pretty good number … or two.

This total is being inflated by the perception of a Jacksonville State offense that moves at breakneck pace. It's had the reputation of moving at a hundred miles per hour for years and through multiple coordinators.

That continues into 2026, where it averaged a play every 25.1 seconds (27th among teams who have played an FBS opponent this year).

However, if you dive into how many plays this team is getting off, it tells a different story.

Much of that tempo came while the Gamecocks were trailing against NDSU. New OC Taylor Housewright isn't "methodical," but he doesn't place a focus on a blistering tempo from his time at Montana State.

It's one of my favorite offensive systems in the FBS. If you have time, go look up some clinic tape; this scheme is great, but it's not an over-friendly scheme like it may appear on the surface.

On the other side, Ohio is all about ball control, deeply rooted in a chain of coaching moves stemming from internal promotions from the Solich tree.

With a methodical approach and a history of stagnant non-conference games against non-power conference opponents (see: 27-20 vs. South Alabama, 17-10 vs. UNLV), I'm siding with under 50.5 points, even just under the key figure of 51.

Pick: Under 50.5 (Play to 48.5)
