James Madison Dukes Betting Preview: Napier Brings the Tempo
James Madison enters this matchup at 2-0 after beating Liberty, 20-13, before committing an absolute felony against Wagner in an 87-3 demolition.
But we can throw most of that Wagner box score directly in the trash.
Nobody needs me to tell them that scoring 87 against an overmatched FCS opponent looks impressive, but there were still things James Madison showed against Liberty that make me interested in backing the points here.
The Dukes are generating 0.15 EPA/Play against FBS competition, including 0.21 EPA/Pass and 0.11 EPA/Rush, which is the type of balanced efficiency profile I want when attacking a total sitting in the mid-40s.
James Madison has also consistently created explosives through the air, averaging north of nine YPA through two games while throwing four touchdowns without an interception, and the Dukes have turned nine of their first 11 red-zone trips into points.
That's really the key to this handicap.
I also love the tempo that head coach Billy Napier has brought to this offense, as we should see a ton of possessions against a depleted San Diego State defense.
I don't need James Madison to roll up 600 yards or recreate anything close to the Wagner score; I just need its efficient drives to end in touchdowns rather than field goals.
Plus, the Aztecs love to push the pace on offense, which will lead to even more possessions.
San Diego State Aztecs Betting Preview: Explosive Aztecs?
San Diego State is coming off a 28-10 loss to UCLA, and I think that ugly final is doing us a favor with this number.
The Aztecs looked absolutely pathetic on offense, and it looks like a long year ahead for Sean Lewis’ team.
But here I'm buying the dip.
The Aztecs hung 53 points on Portland State in the opener before a significantly more difficult defensive matchup last week, but Lewis isn't suddenly going to throw the offensive philosophy in the garbage because of one poor performance.
San Diego State owns a 47.4% Offensive Success Rate with a 50% Rushing Success Rate, and while the passing attack hasn't been nearly as efficient, this matchup gives quarterback Jayden Denegal a much better opportunity to create explosive plays.
James Madison allows a 51.7% Passing Success Rate and 0.19 EPA/Pass against FBS competition, which should give Denegal opportunities to attack downfield if the Dukes are forced to commit additional bodies toward slowing down the run.
I'm not asking Denegal to turn into Patrick Mahomes here, but even if he turns back into a pumpkin, it will help give James Madison a short field. I really don’t understand this total, as I think it could turn into a chaotic mess.
The Aztecs have a ton of questions on defense, so James Madison is going to move the ball at will.
James Madison vs San Diego State Pick, Betting Analysis
This number feels a few points light, and a lot of that has to do with San Diego State scoring only 10 points last week. However, both offenses play at a high tempo, which should have you questioning this number.
James Madison owns a positive EPA/Play profile against FBS competition and should have opportunities to create explosives through the air, while SDSU's 47.4% Success Rate tells me the Aztecs are moving the ball efficiently enough to contribute their share of the scoring.
Then there's the Lewis factor. My man loves to ramp up the pace, even when his offense is going completely backwards.
I'm generally interested in buying Lewis overs when the market gives me a depressed total because tempo creates possessions, and more possessions create more opportunities for explosives, busted coverages, short fields, and the type of cheap touchdown that can completely flip an Over ticket.
We aren't being asked to get into the 60s here, so this seems like a completely reasonable number to soar over the total. Call me a sucker, but there is far too much working in our favor here.
