Louisiana vs Louisiana Tech College Football Preview
Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Betting Preview: Sky is Off Limits
Louisiana is off to a red-hot start to its 2026 campaign with the Ragin’ Cajuns having prevailed in four of their first five games of the season (their sole defeat came against USC).
In head coach Michael Desormeaux's fifth season at the helm, Louisiana has thrived particularly on the defensive side of the football, surrendering just 19.4 points per game.
Aside from its matchup with USC — in which Louisiana was clearly in a mismatch — the defense allowed its other four opponents just 12 points of offense on average.
Louisiana junior QB Lunch Winfield leads the team with 844 passing yards and an incredibly high 364 rushing yards. The Cajuns have a run-first philosophy, ranking near the top nationally in rush play percentage.
Louisiana’s offensive schematics emphasize power zone reads, often utilizing pistol sets and play-action as well.
While Lunch has been very impressive with his feet, the Ragin’ Cajuns’ junior is relatively one-dimensional and has thrown just two touchdown passes this season.
The Ragin’ Cajuns leading receiver — junior wideout KeDarius Wade — has caught just seven passes for 125 yards.
If Louisiana is to keep on rolling as it enters a tough stretch in its Sun Belt conference schedule, Desormeaux’s offense will require far more than just designed runs from its athletic dual-threat QB.
Louisiana Tech Bulldogs Betting Preview: QB's Worst Commute
While Louisiana Tech enters its Week 6 matchup with the Ragin’ Cajuns having split its first four contests, the Bulldogs have had a far more challenging strength of schedule, with their two losses coming on the road to LSU and Baylor.
Following an injury to Bulldogs starting QB Blake Baker, who fractured his hand in Tech’s Week 3 loss to Baylor, senior Trey Kukuk has largely impressed in his first two-plus games under center.
Kukuk has proven quite effective as a dual-threat option under center, as he's already rushed for 167 yards and a touchdown.
Kukuk is a far superior passer to his counterpart Lunch, throwing for 468 yards through the air with three passing TDs over the last two weeks.
Wideout Jalen Mickens is having a breakout sophomore campaign, as he's already surpassed his freshman season receiving metrics, corralling 21 receptions for 342 yards thus far.
While Louisiana Tech head coach Sonny Cumbie is largely praised for his offensive mind, it's the Bulldogs’ defensive unit that I actually feel will make the biggest impact on Saturday.
Under defensive coordinator Luke Olson, Louisiana Tech’s defense has engineered an extremely volatile and aggressive approach, which has led to the Bulldogs ranking seventh in the entire country in defensive havoc rate.
The defensive unit is exceptional at disrupting plays in the backfield for negative yardage, and also boasts overwhelming, aggressive coverage in the secondary that's led to Olson’s defense leading all of college football in "Pass Defended" metrics.
In what should be a relatively closely contested matchup on Saturday night, I expect Louisiana Tech’s defense to be the difference-maker in this Sun Belt clash.

Louisiana vs Louisiana Tech Pick, Betting Analysis
While Winfield has been quite effective when it comes to running the football, the Louisiana senior couldn't be further from a gifted pocket passer, which gives me some slight cause for concern versus an uber-aggressive Bulldogs defense.
As previously touched upon, Louisiana Tech leads the entire nation in passes defended and boasts a top-10 rank in college football in tackles for loss (TFL) — both of which I expect to give Winfield some serious trouble.
The Louisiana offense ranks 104th in college football in havoc allowed, given its offensive line has struggled mightily with Winfield being pressured 48 times on just 135 dropbacks.
The Ragin’ Cajuns have also been very turnover-prone, having already coughed up eight fumbles with two interceptions.
Fresh off an exhilarating 31-29 win over a disciplined Army squad, Louisiana Tech's offense hit its stride by racking up 503 total yards while posting a staggering 8.8 yards per play.
Tailback Dylone Brooks enters Saturday's conference showdown playing his best football yet, coming off a career-high 200 all-purpose yards in his last game.
This matchup marks Louisiana Tech’s inaugural Sun Belt conference contest, and I anticipate a highly-charged atmosphere in Ruston that should give the homestanding Bulldogs a distinct advantage from the jump.
That said, I feel confident backing Louisiana Tech to cover its -3 spread on Saturday in what I expect to be a stellar performance from the Bulldogs.
Pick: Louisiana Tech -3.5
