Northern Illinois vs UNLV College Football Preview
Northern Illinois Huskies Betting Preview: Doggin' It
This season was never going to be a success for Northern Illinois. It moved conferences, choosing to align with a better-funded league, albeit with a wildly incompatible program history, lost its head coach in the process, and is off to an uncompetitive 0-7 start — one that includes a loss to FCS Illinois State.
Travel logistics for a school with this athletic budget and the brunt of that travel are still unrealized. To close the season, NIU plays three road games at UNLV, San Jose State, and North Dakota State.
Given the way this season has shaken out, Rob Harley won't be back next year. The signs of that realization are already starting to show as the Huskies were blasted for 56 points by 1-6 Hawaii at home, giving the Bows their first conference win of the year. Assignments were bad, NIU's defensive line was pummeled by a terrible Hawaii offensive front, and most importantly, the effort left the stadium.
Bringing in Taron Dickens late in the game was a complete bust — it's easy to see why North Carolina was happy to part with him, but also trying to immerse himself in the scheme starting late in camp wasn't a great start. There's no help at the skill positions, and the offensive line can't protect Dickens. Even if he were an above-average QB here, we would never find out.
NIU is a team in full quit mode and should be treated as such.

UNLV Rebels Betting Preview: Best of a Bad Situation
To summon a coaching cliché, UNLV's bye week came at a pretty good time. Coming off a huge 13-7 win over North Dakota State, UNLV allowed 430 yards on the ground and 41 points at Air Force in a pretty obvious letdown spot. This 4-3 start is the worst under Dan Mullen, and the offense, at times, looks as bad as it's been since the Marcus Arroyo days.
What made UNLV so lethal on offense under Mullen was a dynamic run game. This year, that game (despite returning star Jai'Den Thomas and athlete Jackson Arnold) has turned into a crippling weakness, ranking 121st in Success Rate. Jet Thomas has been perfectly ordinary (4.8 yards per rush, only three touchdowns), and Arnold has been extremely liable with the football when he runs.
The offensive line was retooled this offseason with a handful of important departures, and the unit just hasn't been up to standard since. It can't get a push up front, and Arnold holds onto the ball for so long that they end up giving up pressures and sacks.
On the other end, you have a defense that's extremely inconsistent. In Week 7, it held North Dakota State to just 176 yards on the ground but then turned around and gave up 430 the next week at Air Force. UNLV turned its season-opener against Memphis into a rock fight, losing 27-20, and then it gave up 44 to North Texas just two games later. Cal found 31; Hawaii was stifled to six at home. You just don't know which Rebels defense will show up weekly.
Fortunately, there's reprieve on the horizon as UNLV finishes with three conference opponents with a combined 9-14 record… oh, and New Mexico.

Northern Illinois vs UNLV Pick, Betting Analysis
There's not a ton to handicap here. UNLV plays with a super rest advantage (coming off a bye and playing at home) against a team with nothing left to play for this season. Harley is a lame duck coach, and it was immediately evident the players are on quit watch, particularly on defense.
NIU was already one of the FBS' worst teams to begin with, save for Sacramento State, but back-to-back spankings at the hands of some pretty remedial offenses is reason for even more concern. Take into account this is NIU's only home game between Weeks 7-10 with several thousand miles to cover, and it's easy to see a spot where the Huskies come out flat in Vegas.
UNLV is the superior team with superior athletes and a conference race still very much in play. Lopsided talent, lopsided coaching, and lopsided motivation spell disaster for this NIU defense.
The Rebels have a real opportunity to get right offensively off the bye in a climate-controlled facility.
