Oklahoma State Cowboys Betting Preview: A Dynamic Offense

Oklahoma State pummeled Colorado last week by the score of 57-24. It was the most points that the Cowboys had scored in a game all season long, and it was all thanks to one of the nation’s most talented QBs, Drew Mestemaker.

The projected top-five pick was slinging it all day, with 386 passing yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. His chemistry with Justin Bowick, once again, was impeccable, connecting for 138 yards, 27.6 yards per catch, and a touchdown to boot.

But Mestemaker likes to get everyone involved if given the opportunity. Including Bowick, three players reached 70 receiving yards or more; four if you want to include Miles Coleman’s 69 yard effort.

However, the star of the show was running back Caleb Hawkins, who just may be the game’s most underrated running backs. In his freshman year, Hawkins ran for 1,400 yards, and this season is at 700. But against Colorado, he posted 120 yards on the ground, including 72 through the air.

You can tack Mestemaker and Hawkins’ success to the offensive line as well, given the fact that they only allow havoc on 11% of snaps, which is in the 92nd percentile in the FBS.

On the other hand, I think this defense should be a lot better, but it isn’t. The Cowboys are lucky that they have three powerful weapons on offense in Mestemaker, Hawkins and Bowick.

They don’t generate a ton of havoc and the secondary has been a bit tawdry, especially with Mose Phillips out for the season.

The only bright spot of the secondary has been corner LaDainian Fields, with four PBUs and four interceptions.

But the execution needs to be better, as the Cowboys allow 27.7 points per game.

Iowa State Cyclones Betting Preview: Get Flora Going

Iowa State was already in a weird position this season. Starting the first four games with two ranked opponents isn’t a way you like to ease into the season.

Supposedly things should get easier, but not until the Cyclones’ last ranked matchup of the season, which is the Cowboys.

It got ugly last week against 25th-ranked Arizona. And perhaps that’s putting it nicely. The Wildcats finished the first half with a molly-whopping on ISU, entering the second half with a 25-3 lead.

Ultimately, the Wildcats scored 14 more points to decimate Iowa State with a 39-3 victory.

QB Jaylen Raynor has been serviceable in his first season in the Big 12 after spending three seasons at Arkansas State. But serviceable doesn’t mean much in power conference ball. He’s completed 58.7% of his passes, throwing for seven touchdowns, but four interceptions.

The problem is, his offensive line has done a horrible job protecting him. Raynor’s a dual-threat, but that can be offset if he’s using his legs to run away from pressure, which happens often. ISU has allowed Havoc on 17.4% of its snaps, which is 117th in the FBS.

Cyclones’ running back Aiden Flora is the heartbeat of this offense and it’s not even close. He leads the team in carries by 47 over Raynor, and the next running back has 27 carries.

The former walk-on has turned into one of the game’s most efficient running backs. He ranks 28th with 714 rushing yards, but PFF has given him a 87.7 grade, which ranks 12th.

The defensive side of the ball has certainly been a problem for ISU, as it doesn’t generate much havoc, nor does it force many turnovers, only averaging 0.8 per game.

Oklahoma State vs Iowa State Pick, Betting Analysis

The big question for me is whether Oklahoma State can stop Flora or not.

The Cowboys are pretty vulnerable against the run, allowing 147.8 rushing yards per game. Last week, they held Colorado to just 56 yards which certainly helped their standing but during West Virginia week, allowed 335 yards, including a staggering 193 from Cam Cook.

Oklahoma State is the superior team here, but I see Flora having a big game after being held down by Arizona last week.

We have this game projected for Oklahoma State to win by 3.1 points, and with this spread being at 9.5, I can see this being a brawl.

Pick: Iowa State +9.5
