Old Dominion vs App State College Football Preview
Old Dominion Monarchs Betting Preview
Old Dominion enters Boone at 1-4, and it's becoming increasingly difficult to find anything encouraging about this offense.
The Monarchs were just embarrassed by Georgia State, 42-10, managing only 79 passing yards despite using three quarterbacks. Quinn Henicle returned to the starting lineup but completed just 8-of-15 passes for 49 yards, while Ryan Huff and Jaxon Potter combined for another 30.
That's not exactly a quarterback room I'm interested in backing to score an abundance of points on the road. The underlying numbers are even more concerning.
ODU ranks 138th nationally in Offensive Success Rate, and while the Monarchs have occasionally generated explosive plays, those chunk gains haven't translated into sustained scoring opportunities.
The offensive line has been an absolute disaster.
Old Dominion ranks 138th nationally in Line Yards and Stuff Rate, while surrendering five sacks per game. Its inability to consistently win at the point of attack has forced Henicle and Huff into obvious passing situations, where the offense has struggled to protect either quarterback.
The Havoc numbers tell a similar story. ODU has allowed Havoc on nearly a quarter of its offensive snaps, creating an almost impossible environment for an offense that already struggles to stay ahead of schedule.
That's particularly problematic for a team whose Finishing Drives profile has been undermined by negative plays and inconsistent quarterback play.
The Monarchs have now scored 17, 20, and 10 points in their last three games, and the 20-point performance against James Madison required a considerably more productive passing performance from Huff than anything we saw last weekend.
WR Sidney Mbanasor is also out for the season, while TJ Johnson's availability remains worth monitoring.
There's simply not much here to suggest this offense is suddenly going to become efficient, and I think we are in for a long afternoon once again for the Monarchs.

Appalachian State Mountaineers Betting Preview
Appalachian State enters this matchup at 3-1 following a bye week, and I think the additional preparation time could be particularly valuable against an ODU offense that has struggled with protection assignments and negative plays.
The Mountaineers are allowing 22.2 points per game and just 120.2 rushing yards per contest, ranking 46th nationally in rushing defense. That might not sound overwhelming, but consider the opponent here since their offense is a complete disaster.
Old Dominion is averaging only 105.6 rushing yards per game and 2.9 YPC, ranking 127th and 132nd nationally, respectively.
The Monarchs have struggled to establish anything resembling a consistent rushing attack, and now they're facing a defense allowing only 3.6 YPC. The Neers should be able to stifle the running game right from the jump.
App State has also been aggressive in the secondary, averaging 1.5 INTs per game, which ranks inside the top 10 nationally. That's a plus considering the matchup against an ODU offense completing just 51.6% of its passes.
The Mountaineers don't necessarily need to generate an overwhelming Havoc Rate to win this matchup defensively. They just need to continue forcing ODU into the long-yardage situations that have plagued the Monarchs all season.
App State is coming off a 41-31 loss to NC State, but the bye week should allow the Mountaineers to regroup before opening Sun Belt play at home. I expect this to get ugly pretty quickly.

Old Dominion vs App State Pick, Betting Analysis
I'm not interested in betting Old Dominion to do much of anything offensively right now. The Monarchs rank dead last nationally in Success Rate, 138th in Line Yards and Stuff Rate, and they're surrendering five sacks per game.
That's an absolutely brutal combination when you're asking an offense to consistently sustain drives. App State doesn't have to be an elite defensive unit to take advantage of those deficiencies.
The recent box scores don't inspire much confidence, either. ODU scored 17 against East Carolina, 20 against James Madison, and 10 against Georgia State, and now the Monarchs head to Boone against a rested Appalachian State team.
There's also a potential weather angle worth monitoring, with early forecasts calling for rain and breezy conditions. That's not ideal for an offense already struggling to protect its QBs and consistently move the chains.
Expect an ugly game in Boone that should be pretty lopsided; I don’t see how ODU scores much here.
Pick: Old Dominion Team Total Under 19.5
