Prairie View A&M Panthers Betting Preview

Prairie View A&M has reloaded very nicely after losing several key pieces from last year's 10-win team and has seen head coach Tremaine Jackson execute a full ascent on a program that was stuck in mediocrity for the better part of 10 years. Quarterback Tevin Carter has thrown for 526 yards and five touchdowns without an interception over the last two games while adding 183 yards (before sacks) on the ground. He has full command of the offense, which is a huge bright spot given who they were replacing.

The Panthers' ground game is explosive, but it hasn’t been overly consistent. Prairie View A&M was competitive against Tarleton State because of Carter’s arm, but it was the defense that set the tone last week at home against Texas Southern.

The Panthers' stop unit forced three punts and a turnover in the third quarter while outscoring Texas Southern 28-0 to bust the game wide open. The aggressive defense registered seven sacks and 11 TFL’s last week, a much better showing than we saw in the opener. This defense is going to be up against it this week against Baylor on the road.

Baylor Bears Betting Preview

The Baylor Bears suffered a heartbreaking loss in Week 1 against Auburn, coming up just short on a two-point conversion attempt that failed, but there were a lot of positives to draw from the 17-16 loss. DJ Lagway threw the ball really well, and the offense racked up 436 total yards against a strong SEC defense.

Turnovers, missed field goals, and being stopped on downs three times limited the scoring output, but the performance was there. Baylor saw receivers Gavin Freeman, Jadon Porter and Louis Brown IV step up and make excellent catches against Auburn while keeping drives alive. The ground game should get going this week, and Baylor should find more success in standard downs.

The defense also played really well last week in the loss. Auburn’s offensive line had plenty of problems against the Bears' front, which registered five sacks and 11 tackles-for-loss while effectively rattling Byrum Brown, who threw three interceptions. Travion Barnes and Devin Turner were all over the field, and Devonte Tezino registered a pair of sacks. This defense should have an excellent showing here against what appears to be an overmatched SWAC FCS team.

Prairie View A&M vs Baylor Pick, Betting Analysis

This line opened with Baylor as 38.5-point favorites with a total set at 55.5. I am going to look at a derivative market here. Baylor’s team total is 47.5 , but their point total in the first half is 27.5. I am going to take Baylor to score over 27.5 points in the first half.

I listened to both of Dave Aranda’s media press conferences this week, and he was adamant about playing a nameless, faceless opponent. He is keeping his team focused on a max effort on both sides of the ball regardless of the name of the opponent, and we should see a motivated bunch to show out at home coming off the loss.

Baylor had several opportunities to score points against Auburn, and Aranda mentioned cleaning up some of the things that thwarted drives last week. He was very intent on wanting to score more points, and PVAMU is a defense that Baylor can exploit.

DJ Lagway threw the ball exceptionally well last week, and while he is considered day-to-day, the intent is to play him against PVAMU. I could see him playing the first half before giving way to the backups in the second half, so long as the margin is there.

The ground game will perform better this week as well, and I expect Dawson Pendergrass and Michael Turner to gash the PVAMU defense early. Baylor will have much more success in early downs, and the methodical nature of their drives that we saw against Auburn will not be needed here. I expect a quicker strike offensive attack and more possessions than expected in the first half.

Lastly, the Baylor defensive front was nasty last week against Auburn, and this group will cause havoc and register negative plays in the backfield here. PVAMU has a weak punter who is averaging just 34.4 yards per punt this season, and Baylor will have a massive special teams advantage in the return game.

Don’t be surprised if a long punt return or a shanked PVAMU punt sets up the Bears with a short field early in this game. This should snowball quickly, and Baylor should exceed its 1st half team total.

Pick: Baylor 1st Half Team Total Over 27.5
