San Diego State Aztecs Betting Preview: Trouble on the Back End
San Diego State enters its 2026 campaign in what is undoubtedly the dawn of a new era for an Aztec football program now playing its first year in a reborn Pac-12 Conference under head coach Sean Lewis.
The Aztecs dazzled in a dominant 53-20 victory over Portland State to kick off the 2026 season, but Lewis’ bunch will face a far tougher challenge in Week 2, with UCLA awaiting its arrival at the Rose Bowl on Saturday evening.
San Diego State quarterback Jayden Denegal returns under center in full health for the Aztecs in 2026 after missing several games last season with injuries.
Denegal boasts a Josh Allen-esque physique, standing at 6-foot-5 and over 240 pounds, making him an extremely difficult QB to bring to the ground. While the former Michigan signal-caller was largely unimpressive in SDSU’s opener, I think he has a ton of upside for the remainder of the season.
Aztec RB1 Lucky Sutton leads the charge for Lewis’ backfield following a breakout All-Mountain West campaign that led to him preseason All-Pac-12 honors and Maxwell Award Watch List considerations.
Sutton is coming off a phenomenal performance in Week 1, finding the end zone three times against Portland State.
Lewis’ offense returns its top four pass-catchers from last season in addition to adding Oregon transfer wide receiver Justius Lowe. The former Duck made his mark early, catching a touchdown pass in his first-ever game in a San Diego State uniform.
SDSU also made some sizable changes to its defense, with Demetrius Sumler assuming the role of defensive coordinator, replacing the previous coordinator who left for Nebraska.
The Aztec defense underwent a complete overhaul this past offseason as well, with just 43% of 2025’s defensive unit returning to San Diego.
While San Diego State made several key additions in the transfer portal, including EDGE rushers Kai Wallin and Djibril Rahman, among others, I still expect the defense to struggle mightily over the course of the season, which was surely evident against a horrific Portland State team.
If the Aztecs can exit the Rose Bowl with an outright victory on the road as a double-digit underdog, that would surely establish SDSU as one of the premier squads in the new Pac-12.
UCLA Bruins Betting Preview: Instant Impact
In what was expected to be a major transition year for UCLA following the Bruins' 3-9 season, new head coach Bob Chesney did a tremendous job in Week 1, defeating Cal by 21 points on the road.
In a two-year stint as James Madison's head coach, Chesney finished his first season with a 9-4 record, followed by an exceptional 12-1 campaign in 2025 that resulted in a College Football Playoff berth.
Chesney brought a large chunk of his JMU coaching staff with him. Dean Kennedy takes over as the Bruins’ offensive coordinator, Colin Hitschler becomes the defensive coordinator.
Under Hitschler, UCLA’s new-look defense aims to drastically improve on the Bruins’ 2026 unit that allowed opponents to score nearly 34 points per game last season.
Former Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava is in his second season with the team following an extremely underwhelming 2025 debut as the Bruins’ starting QB.
UCLA's offseason endeavors can best be characterized by its JMU pipeline, with former Dukes RB1 Wayne Knight leading the charge for UCLA’s backfield after recording nearly 1,400 yards and nine scores last season in Harrisonburg.
UCLA RB Anthony Woods was even more impressive in the Bruins’ opener, with the former Idaho Vandal racking up 118 yards on the ground with two touchdowns on just eight rushing attempts.
Knight was just one of several JMU transfers this past offseason, with wide receiver Landon Ellis, tight end Josh Phifer, and offensive linemen Riley Robell and Carter Sweazie.
UCLA’s roster features a whopping 46 transfers, 10 of whom played for the Dukes last season and followed Chesney to the Bruins.
San Diego State vs UCLA Pick, Betting Analysis
UCLA and San Diego State will duke it out in a game where both teams enter with some momentum following Week 1 victories.
While the Aztec offense showed some promise against Portland State, the same can't be said of Sumler’s defensive unit that looked pretty mediocre in that contest.
In addition to Vikings QB Gabe Downing throwing for 280 yards through the air in Week 1, Portland State WR1 Terence Loville showed out with 10 receptions for 119 yards and a receiving touchdown.
Given the vast issues we've seen from this Aztec secondary thus far, I will be looking to build a same-game parlay aligned with that same narrative.
For the first leg in Saturday’s SGP, I'll back Bruins slot receiver Mikey Matthews to record at least 25 receiving yards with a -225 price tag.
I'll also take a shot on a UCLA double result on the back end of our SGP at -210. For those who are unaware, that requires the Bruins to lead at halftime and win the game outright.
