San Jose State vs Texas Pick, Betting Analysis

The entire story with Texas revolves around Arch Manning.

But what’s getting buried is that the defense was great last week.

The Longhorns held Jeremiah Smith to 2.15 yards per route run. Last season, Smith posted 3.15 YRR in this matchup. This season, he was blanketed and bothered.

The ‘Horns should own the skies against the Spartans on Saturday. San Jose State’s team total is 7.5, and I doubt the team gets there. I expect to see a defensive masterclass from Texas as it bounces back from a tough Week 1 loss.

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian isn’t one to embarrass opponents in these paycheck games. For example:

  • 37-10 win over Rice in 2023
  • 31-10 win over Wyoming in 2023
  • 52-0 win over Colorado State in 2023
  • 56-7 win over UTSA in 2024
  • 51-3 win over ULM in 2024

This is an opportunity for Arch to feel good. He’ll get the opportunity to play three quarters.

However, the ‘Horns were scoring more in these games last year because Sarkisian wanted to give Manning opportunities to run the full offense. This season, I expect he’ll go back to a vanilla offense late in the game to hide more of the offensive playbook for the following weeks.

Pick: Under 52.5 (-110, BetMGM)
