TCU Horned Frogs Betting Preview: Not Flopping Yet

The Gordon Sammis and Jaden Craig experiment in Fort Worth is off to a slow start.

To open the season, TCU lost an ugly one to North Carolina in Ireland (not a shocking place to lose a weird game) before coming home, taking a bye, and righting the ship against Grambling State (63-7) and Arkansas State (31-7).

Given the history of Ireland losers, TCU's perception tanked fast following the loss.

That said, this is a buy team in the market. At least, in the right spot.

Craig was completely ineffective against UNC, averaging just 5.5 yards per attempt and not throwing a single touchdown while also taking three disastrous sacks.

But against his next two opponents, Sammis allowed Craig to take more downfield shots and play more in an NFL system than in Week 0. His average depth of target increased from 6.7 to 13.6 and 11.8 over the next two games.

Better yet, TCU's best receiver, Jordan Dwyer, is slated to play his first snaps this coming week. Running back Jeremy Payne has thrived in Sammis' wide zone-heavy system, as well.

Defensively, Andy Avalos' system has finally taken root in Fort Worth.

The first year had some growing pains and injuries (plus some deficiencies in talent) that caused last year's defense to fall apart at times.

But this year, it's been excellent given a modest cast of opposing offenses. This week, TCU travels to UCF to play yet another team with a poor offense and down its starting QB.

Avalos has put a lid on opposing offenses, limiting explosives and forcing teams to move the ball via chunk plays — something North Carolina, Arkansas State, and UCF don't thrive doing.

TCU is a team that likely won't fall in line with the other Ireland losers whose entire season crumbled. There are signs of a quality team here, though the next few games against UCF, BYU and rival Baylor will really sort out what the Horned Frogs are in 2026.

UCF Knights Betting Preview: Struggles in Orlando

Let's call it like it is: UCF is a bad football team.

Quarterback Alonza Barnett is out for the foreseeable future (at least Weeks 4 and 5) and, despite his name being recognizable from some fun football at FIU, Keyone Jenkins just isn't it.

Against Georgia State — a team better than I expected, but still a subpar Sun Belt roster — Jenkins completed a paltry 7-of-17 passes for no touchdowns and an interception. Ugly.

Luckily for UCF, which was tied with Georgia State, 27-27, until the final possession of the third quarter, Duke Watson broke loose for 177 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

The offensive line was average in that game, and it doesn't look great for Scott Frost's second go-around in Orlando.

We can hand-wave away the 12-7 loss at Pitt in a blinding rainstorm that was delayed — though UCF ran for only 20 yards on 22 carries, led by Barnett's 13 — but even that performance came under Barnett.

Under Jenkins, UCF looks like a legitimate disaster. I'm not sure he has a handle on Frost's offense, and the game moves a bit quicker in the Big 12 than it does in Conference USA.

I have no faith in this Knights defense, either. It was outgained significantly by Georgia State (485-390), and the Panthers gained 65% of available yards. The defense made some good adjustments in the second half, but Georgia State pieced together drives of:

  • 10 plays, 75 yards (touchdown)
  • 14 plays, 69 yards (touchdown)
  • 2 plays, 82 yards (touchdown)
  • 10 plays, 74 yards (field goal)

All consecutively to close the first half.

Downright inexcusable for a program of the caliber of UCF, barring a North Texas-esque season from Georgia State.

TCU vs UCF Pick, Betting Analysis

This game features teams I handicap heading in opposite directions.

Since a 73-9 opening-night win over Bethune-Cookman (perhaps the most lopsided roster matchup of the weekend), UCF has slid into an unreliable team down its starting QB.

The offense is horrific without Barnett, and the defense is suspect even against lesser competition.

Should Barnett's injury prove to be longer-term than just Weeks 4-5 — which many reports have hinted at, calling his hamstring injury "significant" — UCF could slide down into the Purdue/Arkansas/Boston College territory.

TCU, meanwhile, looked flat and disorganized in its first game under a new offensive coordinator overseas. Since then, the offense has moved on time much better and gained a key player back in Dwyer.

The Horned Frogs have multiple ways to score, be it Craig's improved patience or via the run game under Payne. Sammis has always managed to find success as a play-caller.

Though away from home, I'm taking TCU to win this game. The Horned Frogs have superior coaching, quarterback play, defense, and injury luck for this contest.

Pick: TCU ML -150 (Play to -165)
