Texas Southern vs Prairie View A&M Preview
Texas Southern Tigers Betting Preview
Texas Southern looked really good offensively in its opener, scoring 42 points and racking up 462 yards in the 42-30 win over NC Central last week.
Southern transfer Cam’Ron McCoy threw the ball well, but the running game stole the show as the Tigers put up 277 yards on 7.7 yards per carry.
Athean Renfro Jr. and Jacob Washington gashed NC Central all game, and the Tigers registered explosive chunk plays while scoring with regularity.
NC Central does not have a strong defense and Texas Southern took advantage of it, but the Tigers might have a tougher go of things this week against Prairie View A&M.
The defense did a great job of creating negative plays behind the line of scrimmage. Eight tackles-for-loss and three sacks were registered, with Thurman Rayborn and Garfield Lawrence leading the way.
The pass defense was outstanding: NC Central quarterback Nelson Layne completed just 16-of-31 passes for 131 yards, and the defense allowed only one explosive play.
Despite being out on the field for 73 total plays, the defense was able to put the clamps down in the second half while allowing just six points after halftime.
This unit will have to show well on the road on Sunday for Texas Southern to remain in this game against what is widely considered the best team in the conference in Prairie View A&M.
Prairie View A&M Panthers Betting Preview
The Panthers really had an excellent 2025 season, as head coach Tremaine Jackson led this group to a 10-win season behind a lockdown defense that allowed 13 or fewer points seven times in SWAC play.
This unit did take on a top-10 team in the FCS in Tarleton State in its first game this season, struggling against an offense that will round into one of the best at the FCS level this season.
The Panthers were in a decent position defensively and did register some defensive havoc with four tackles-for-loss, but the skill position players were too much to handle.
Tevin Carter was a bright spot for the offense while completing 25-of-40 passes for 309 yards and a touchdown. He also led the team in rushing with 130 yards.
Four receivers caught at least four passes for the Panthers, who had several explosive plays against Tarleton State’s defense.
Damien McDaniel and Rodny Ojo made great plays receiving passes, and Jahbari Kuykendall had an explosive 53-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter.
The competition this week should allow for Prairie View A&M to have continued success offensively.

Texas Southern vs Prairie View A&M Pick, Betting Analysis
This line opened with Prairie View A&M listed as 10.5-point favorites with a total set at 54.5. With the spread and total where they're at, I'm going to look to play the PVAMU team total over 33.5.
Carter was a complete dude on the road against a very formidable opponent and the poise he showed throwing and running the ball was impressive. He stood in the pocket and delivered great throws against the Texans, and this offense is going to have success against Texas Southern.
Last year, Prairie View A&M amassed over 450 yards while recording several big, chunk plays. Carter’s running ability will break down the defense and these receivers will have a field day against the Tigers' secondary.
The Prairie View A&M defense is much better than it showed last week while playing an elite FCS offense, and I would expect Texas Southern to struggle at times moving the football.
Quicker possessions will lead to short fields, and I would expect at least a pair of quick-strike scoring drives, which will further provoke the Panthers team total to be exceeded.
This Panthers team was a force in SWAC play last season and the offense had a lot of questions coming into 2026, with most of them getting answered in the opener.
PVAMU is now playing a significantly weaker defense this week, while Texas Southern is playing up in competition after an easier opponent in the opener. This game will be close for a while, but PVAMU should pull away in the second half and exceed the projected team total of 33.5.
Pick: Prairie View A&M Team Total Over 33.5 (Play to 34)
