UAB vs UConn Pick
Overs need three things:
- Pace
- Explosive offenses
- Defenses that lack fundamentals
UConn games are 6-2 to the Over this season. UAB games are 5-2 to the Over. These are two of the top 10 teams in terms of average points beyond the closing total.
Alex Mortensen dropped the pace of play in UAB’s big upset win over Memphis, running at over 30 seconds per play. He did that to protect his horrific defense.
However, for this game, I expect Joe Fagnano and the UConn offense to set the pace. Fagnano has been spinning it, and the Huskies rank 11th nationally in Pass Explosiveness and 25th in Big Plays.
They should rip UAB apart. The Blazers’ defense is terrible, ranking 134th nationally in PFF’s Coverage grades, 121st in their Pass Rush grades, and 135th in Pass Success Rate allowed. They can’t get after the quarterback, and they can’t cover. They’re allowing 3.5 yards per drive, which ranks 134th.
The game against Memphis was an anomaly. The Blazers played keep-away for most of the game, and the Tigers had a backup quarterback for most of the second half. Memphis still had a good shot to score late, but was stuffed at the one-yard line — otherwise, the game goes over the closing total.
I also like the UAB offense. I like whichever quarterback starts — Jalen Kitna or Ryder Burton. Star wide receiver Corri Milliner could return to the team this week after stepping away from the program for a week.
The Blazers should put up points against a UConn coverage unit that allows a high completion rate. The Huskies try to keep things in front of them, but they struggle to tackle — they missed 28 tackles against Rice, which cost them the game.
I expect both offenses to score plenty and hit another Over.
Pick: Over 64 (-110, bet365)
