Oregon State Beavers Betting Preview: Atkinson and Legree Lead the Charge
Oregon State has been the most impressive G6 team in the entire country this season. There…I said it. The five-game win streak is impressive enough, but the Beavers offense has been electric every week, led by Braden Atkinson at quarterback and Jesse Legree at wide receiver.
This combo has been torching the opposition all season, with Atkinson throwing for 24 touchdowns against just two interceptions while completing 69% of his passes.
Legree leads the nation with 1040 receiving yards, and his 14 receiving touchdowns are eye-popping. His worst game of the season came against FCS-level Montana, and he torched two Big 12 secondaries in Houston and Texas Tech early on.
The offensive line has improved significantly over last season, surrendering only 9 sacks and 21 tackles-for-loss this year. The ground game does enough to keep defenses honest, and AJ Newberry has led the way with 431 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
Oregon State has received significantly better coaching this season, with Jamarcus Shephard proving he clearly was the right hire for the head coaching position. It's incredible what this offense has been able to do, and coming off the bye week, I expect this unit to be fully locked in.
Oregon State's defense hasn't been overly strong this season, but the Beavers have done well to prevent explosive plays, and the unit has been decent on third down and in the red zone. Foes are converting third down at just 38% this season, and only 60% of red zone trips have resulted in touchdowns.
Takari Hickle has registered six sacks, and the defense has 18 as a unit, with a fair amount of activity in the backfield overall from this defensive front.
Fresno State Bulldogs Betting Preview: Serious Stakes in This Game
Fresno State is off the bye week as well, and the break could not have come at a better time, as Fresno State suffered a gut-wrenching road loss at San Diego State, effectively ending the Bulldogs' bid to win the Pac-12.
They faced a backup QB for one of the conference's worst offenses, and the defense couldn't make stops down the stretch. Fresno State has to regroup quickly, as the remaining schedule is tough, and a loss here could put them in serious jeopardy of making a bowl game.
The Fresno State offense has been so jerky this season. They want to run the football, but have been terrible at it for much of the season. Rayshon Luke and Bryson Donelson have been the two featured backs, and together they've rushed for 632 yards and six touchdowns this season. While not overly explosive, both backs have been efficient and have breakaway abilities.
Quarterback Jayden Mandal has improved throughout the season, throwing for 1393 yards with an 8:1 touchdown-to-interception ratio. The run game unlocks a lot of opportunity in the passing game, and Fresno State throws the ball better when they are able to run it, and the guys they are throwing the ball to are explosive.
Josiah Freeman and Ezekiel Avit have combined for 54 catches and 818 yards, with six receiving touchdowns total. Their red-zone performances have been great the last two weeks, and Fresno State will have to score touchdowns in the red zone to stay in this game.
The defense is really the cornerstone of the style of football this team wants to play, and the Bulldogs have an excellent defensive coordinator in Nick Benedetto. The truth is, this defense is simply not very talented, despite elite coaching.
This bunch feasted early on against Sacramento State and San Jose State, and the unit looked good against Washington State before the Cougs switched quarterbacks. Performances against Rice, Boise State, and San Diego State have exposed this stop-unit as one that struggles to register stops or create pressure on the opposition.
I wanted to love this defense this season, but I just do not see the talent in the front seven to take control of games, as Fresno State has been pushed around regularly this season.

Oregon St vs Fresno State Pick, Betting Analysis
This line opened with Oregon State as a 6.5-point favorite, with a total that has bounced between 56.5 and 58.5. Oregon State’s team total is 32.5, and as we have done many times this season, we are betting the Beavers to exceed their team total in this game.
Fresno State has not faced a decent passing offense since the opener against USC, where the Bulldogs surrendered 412 passing yards on 13.3 yards per pass attempt. San Jose State and Boise State had some success, but the rest of the offenses they faced have been anemic all season throwing the ball.
This Oregon State pass attack will be the best Fresno State will see all season outside of that opener against USC, and the Bulldogs struggle defending the pass.
Fresno State ranks 76th nationally in pass play success rate, and 87th in pass explosives surrendered, despite the schedule loaded with poor passing offenses. The pass play explosives are going to be there for Oregon State, and Braden Atkinson is going to have time to throw the football and let pass concepts develop.
Fresno State has 15 sacks registered this season, and 13 of them came during a three-game stretch against San Jose State, Rice, and Wazzu. This pass rush won't provide enough pressure to get Atkinson off his mark, and the coverage unit will not be able to hold up.
Fresno State initially desired to play slow and out-possess its opponents, but the Bulldogs have run 65 or more plays in four of their last five games. The ground attack has not been effective, so Mandal is going to have to throw the ball, and Fresno State is going to register successful passing plays against the Oregon State defense.
This will turn into a back-and-forth dual as we saw two weeks ago with Fresno State and San Diego State, but the low-and-slow approach will not work here when the Bulldogs are down multiple scores in the second half.
Oregon State will score five touchdowns in this game. Team total over!
Pick: Oregon State Over 32.5 Team Total (-105, DraftKings)
