UCF Knights Betting Preview
UCF heads north to Pittsburgh with plenty of momentum after a dominant 73-6 victory over Bethune-Cookman in its season opener. The Knights tied the program's single-game scoring record and got whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted it.
The most encouraging part of the performance was what UCF did on the ground. The Knights rushed for 360 total yards on 38 carries, averaging 9.5 yards per attempt, with Duke Watson leading the way with 110 yards, including a 64-yard touchdown scamper on his first touch of the game.
Quarterback Alonza Barnett III made his UCF debut after transferring from James Madison, completing 11 of 18 passes for 158 yards, a touchdown, and an interception.
The Knights were great on the other end of the field as well, holding Bethune-Cookman to 181 yards with two turnovers. Jayden Williams returned an interception 47 yards for a pick-six, while Horace Lockett recovered a fumble.
Things get more difficult this week, as they head on the road to face a Pitt offense with plenty of playmakers and a young quarterback, Mason Heintschel, who can make all the throws.
I'm most concerned about UCF's secondary, which wasn't tested at all last week. Heintschel and company will take their chances early and often, and I have real doubts that the Knights' back end can hold up.
Pitt Panthers Betting Preview
Just as UCF handled its business in an opening rout of a lower-level opponent, the Panthers beat the brakes off a proud Miami-OH program.
Unlike opening in the FCS ranks, Miami is a program that has regularly contended in the MAC and won bowl games. But Pitt did not care on Saturday, scoring touchdowns on the first three possessions en route to 646 total yards of total offense.
The aforementioned Heintschel completed 31 of 41 passes for 453 yards, seven touchdowns and no interceptions. His seven touchdown passes actually tied the school’s single-game record, and each went to a different receiver, showing Pitt will have plenty of options within its skill group.
I don't see the Panthers going for 50-plus again on Saturday, but I also don't expect the Knights to be able to provide much resistance.
On the other side of the ball, Pat Narduzzi hopes this team can go back to playing defense like one of his old Michigan State units.
The Panthers held Miami to under 30 total rushing yards, and stifled them consistently on third downs.
Getting after Barnett and forcing him to leave the pocket early will likely be a big part of Narduzzi's game plan, and could allow Pitt to force some turnovers.
UCF vs Pitt Pick, Betting Analysis
Pittsburgh is sitting right around a touchdown favorite in this one, and I think there's value in laying it with the home team.
I'm not too high on UCF in year two under Scott Frost, and while Pitt is not among the shortlist for ACC Title contenders, this is a team that can absolutely win eight or nine games.
A key matchup will be UCF’s rushing attack squaring off against the Pitt run defense.
The Knights went for 360 rushing yards and seven scores on the ground in Week 1, while the Panthers surrendered only 27 total rushing yards to the Redhawks.
I do think UCF will be a solid rushing offense all year, but a lot of that Week 1 success simply has to do with Bethune-Cookman not having the hogs up front.
Pitt has the size and speed in its front seven to contain the Knights on the ground, and I don't think UCF has the secondary to slow down the Panther passing attack.
Give me Pitt to win and cover at Acrisure in a game I expect them to take by double digits.
