UTEP Miners Betting Preview: Have to Dig Deeper
Down in the West Texas town of El Paso, uncertainty looms. UTEP is going through a complete overhaul on defense, with a returning production mark outside the top 100.
It's an unfortunate transition after quietly excelling on that side of the ball last year. Now, the Miners need to replace a group that ranked in the top 50 in Success Rate allowed and Defensive Finishing Drives.
With negative regression looming large over their defense while integrating a slew of new players, it will be up to the Miners' offense to keep them afloat.
That's a haunting reality when factoring in how poor they were on offense last year, finishing their 2025 campaign ranked 135th in Success Rate and 122nd in Havoc allowed.
Incarnate Word transfer EJ Colson Jr. gets the starting nod under center this year. He was relatively efficient last season, throwing for 2,142 yards and 16 touchdowns while completing 70.9% of his passes.
While his efficiency is noteworthy, Colson was conservative with his throws, averaging just 7.2 yards per completion. UTEP’s offense was heavily reliant on its ability to rattle off a big gain, ranking fourth nationally in explosiveness.
When the Miners were unable to generate an explosive play, they were held to early punts, leading to an uptick in their opponents' number of possessions.
Barring a sudden turnaround with Colson under center, it’s tough to envision UTEP’s underwhelming offense masking its regression on defense. That'll make it difficult for the Miners to keep the score close enough to stay within the number.
Oklahoma Sooners Betting Preview: Getting Back in the Swing of Things
Speaking of regression, there’s a lot to like about Oklahoma heading into the season, primarily on offense with quarterback John Mateer back at full health.
Mateer’s hand injury handicapped the Sooners' ceiling last season, ranking well below league average in Success Rate, Passing Downs EPA Per Play and Havoc allowed.
While it remains to be seen if Mateer can connect with his wideouts at a high enough rate, any improvement will go a long way in their efforts to turn back into a well-rounded unit.
Opposing defenses can no longer just stack the box, freeing up more room in the middle for the Sooners' running backs to exploit.
On the other side of the ball, Oklahoma brings back a majority of its defense. This group was dominant last year, ranking near the top of the board in Success Rate allowed, Points Per Opportunity allowed and Havoc.
With continuity at all three levels of the field, the Sooners are in a great position to build on their momentum, fielding arguably the best defense in the nation.
Even if Mateer gets off to a slow start, their defense will help mask it, giving them plenty of opportunities to get back into a groove.
UTEP vs Oklahoma Pick, Betting Analysis
When it comes to covering a lofty spread, the first thing I look for is whether the defense gets enough stops to give their offense enough scoring opportunities.
The amount of variance that enters the contest once backups come in can crash and burn your ticket.
Fortunately for the Sooners, their defense is more than capable of holding the Miners down, giving their own offense generous field position in the process.
The Sooners' defense isn't just great; it's arguably the best unit in the nation. Oklahoma excels at keeping its opponents in front of the sticks.
Even with Colson giving UTEP's offense some stability, he won't be able to stretch the Sooners' defense, forcing him to rely on throws to the flats and the shallow middle for minimal gains.
The amount of pressure he'll have to deal with will also give his wideouts less time in the open field to break away from the Sooners' coverage.
With UTEP struggling to get into scoring position, expect a healthy Mateer to take advantage of the shortened field and put points on the board.
Bet the Sooners to cover the spread at -42 or better with the intention of middling at UTEP +49 or better once they send in the backups.
