Virginia Tech vs Clemson College Football Preview
Virginia Tech Hokies Betting Preview: Fragile Revival
After a pair of heartbreaking losses, Virginia Tech bounced back in a big way against Georgia Tech, topping the Yellow Jackets 34-24.
In the Hokies' win, Ethan Grunkemeyer was able to get into a groove, throwing for 250 yards and three touchdowns while punching in another score with his legs.
Every bit of Grunkemeyer’s production has been vital to keeping the Hokies competitive, masking an offense that ranks below league average in Success Rate, Finishing Drives and in Havoc Allowed.
When Grunkemeyer is unable to air it out, opposing defenses can stack the box at a higher rate and neutralize their ground game.
Luckily for Virginia Tech, Jeffrey Overton Jr. has been able to successfully fight off contact, averaging six yards per carry. While his success in the backfield has been able to keep the Hokies afloat, negative regression is looming large when matched up against a front seven that excels at stuffing the run.
To make matters worse for Virginia Tech, it's been abysmal on defense since the start of the regular season, limping into Week 8 ranked outside the top 100 in Success Rate and in Points per Opportunity.
Clemson Tigers Betting Preview: Self-Inflicted Wounds
Don’t look now, but Clemson is 2-1 in conference play, with its only loss coming against Miami, which is listed as the heavy favorite to win the ACC title.
That's an impressive feat when factoring in the minimal support the offense receives from its quarterback — Tait Reynolds averaging more than one turnover per game.
With Reynolds struggling to take care of the ball, Clemson has been unable to consistently move the ball down the field while generating a 42.8% Success Rate.
Reynolds also lacks the big-play ability that's needed, averaging just 6.1 yards per throw while ranking 95th in Pass Play Explosiveness.
With no fear of getting beat over the top, opposing corners can creep up to the line of scrimmage to jam the Tigers' receivers.
The Tigers have been unable to hit the ground running, ranking 100th in Rush Play Explosiveness. Until Reynolds can stretch out the second level, Gideon Davidson will continue to be slowed down in the backfield.
While the offense has been unable to find its footing, the Tigers have been far more productive on defense, entering Saturday ranked 20th in Defensive Success Rate, ninth in Finishing Drives and ninth in Havoc.

Virginia Tech vs Clemson Pick, Betting Analysis
While it’s hard to play much worse than Christopher Vizzina, Reynolds has made his best effort to lower Clemson’s floor even further with his sporadic play under center.
Not only does Reynolds rattle off Turnover Worthy Plays at an alarming rate, the Clemson quarterback has struggled to connect with his pass catchers while completing 64.9% of his passes.
Fortunately for Reynolds, he will have a great opportunity to round back into competitive form by exploiting a Hokies defense that resides near the bottom of the board in Defensive Pass Success Rate and in PPA.
With Virginia Tech creating disruptions at a low rate, Reynolds will be able to avoid throwing an ill-advised pick.
On the off chance Virginia Tech is able to create a turnover, points will come at a premium while trying to move the ball on a defense that holds opponents to just 2.68 Points per Opportunity.
With clear advantages on both sides of the ball, place a wager on Clemson to cover the spread at no higher than -3.
If Virginia Tech’s team total ticks up to the key number of 24 before kickoff, place a separate wager on the under as well.
Pick: Clemson -2.5
