Vanderbilt vs Kentucky College Football Preview

Vanderbilt Commodores Betting Preview: September's Promise Is Gone
While Kentucky is riding high on a five-game win streak heading into Saturday’s matchup, the Commodores are trending in the opposite direction with Vandy now having dropped four in a row after winning its first three games of the season.
Vanderbilt true-freshman QB Jared Curtis got off to a phenomenal start to his first collegiate campaign, but we have since seen sizable regression from the Commodores’ youngster with many attributing his downfall to a knee injury he suffered against Auburn in late September.
Regardless, Curtis has thrown just two touchdowns since his return while also having thrown a whopping five interceptions over Vandy’s last three games.
As if the Commodores’ recent offensive struggles weren't enough, Clark Lea’s defensive unit has actually been considerably worse, having allowed just shy of 30 PPG to its six opponents thus far—ranking well outside the top 100 in the country.
Fortunately, Vanderbilt has a huge opportunity to rise to the occasion on Saturday versus a Wildcat squad that has already beaten the likes of Texas A&M, LSU, and the Oklahoma just last weekend.
From a matchup perspective, the Commodores have no choice but to rely on the play of their young QB in Curtis given that Kentucky’s defense is far superior in regard to stopping the run while its secondary is far more exploitable.
For a Vandy squad whose leading rusher has just 270 yards on the season, Curtis must look to his receiving corps to make plays on the offensive side of the football, and more particularly senior wideout Junior Sherrill.
Despite Vanderbilt’s weak QB play in recent weeks, Sherrill has still racked up 628 receiving yards this season—ranking 12th in the nation. The path to victory for Lea’s Commodores is undoubtedly to get the ball into Junior Sherrill’s hands.
Kentucky Wildcats Betting Preview: Unfinished Business
College Football’s 12th-ranked Wildcats enter their Week 8 matchup with Vandy as one of the hottest teams in the entire country, having just rattled off five consecutive victories after splitting the first two games of the season.
Kentucky head coach Will Stein has put all his trust in his QB Kenny Minchey, who is in the midst of an extremely impressive breakout senior season.
The Notre Dame transfer rode the bench for his first three collegiate seasons in South Bend prior to making the decision to enter the transfer portal, which led to Stein giving Minchey his first opportunity to start under center—and in the SEC of all conferences.
Minchey has stepped up to the task and more, throwing for 1,552 passing yards over the Wildcats’ first seven games of the season.
The Kentucky senior has also thrown 13 touchdowns with just one interception and has been remarkably efficient in his first six games as a starter.
Minchey has led this Wildcat offense to 32.7 PPG heading into its Week 8 matchup with Vandy, which ranks inside the top 50 in college football. Freshman wideout Kenny Darby has emerged as Minchey’s top target in a versatile receiving corps.
In addition to Minchey’s spectacular play under center, Kentucky senior RB CJ Baxter has been unstoppable for this Wildcat rushing attack with the 22-year-old having already found the back of the end zone eight times this season.
Kentucky’s defense has not been as strong with its first seven opponents of the season collectively scoring 28 PPG on average.
Though the Wildcats currently post an elite 6-1 overall record this season, Stein’s bunch will undoubtedly need to make some massive improvements on the defensive side of the football given Kentucky has a very challenging SEC schedule to end the regular season.

Vanderbilt vs Kentucky Pick, Betting Analysis
While Saturday’s SEC clash features two teams who couldn't be further apart from one another form-wise heading into Week 8’s matchup, this is not a spot Kentucky should be overlooking Vandy, especially given that the Commodores have won the last two contests.
Though I do favor Kentucky from a betting perspective, I prefer taking a more unique approach as opposed to just laying the full-game 11 points on the Wildcats.
Given that I expect Vanderbilt to be playing from behind and the fact the Commodores’ rushing attack has been nearly non-existent over the last several weeks, I am expecting Sherrill to have a massive game.
That said, I favor backing Junior to exceed his 5.5 reception total with -120 juice as I feel the Commodores’ definitive path to staying in this football game is to throw the ball to their premier playmaker in Sherrill.
Pick: Junior Sherrill Over 5.5 Receptions (-122)
