William & Mary Tribe Betting Preview
William & Mary shocked the FCS football world in its opener at Villanova, mounting an incredible comeback in the final minutes to steal a win from the nationally ranked Wildcats.
That effort was followed up by a slow-burning, grind-it-out win against feisty Delaware State. The Tribe were off and running at 2-0.
Defensively, the wheels have fallen off, and against Lehigh, understandably so. The Mountain Hawks are one of the best teams at the FCS level, equipped with a power run game that few in the Patriot League will be able to contain this year.
The defensive performance last week against Fordham, a team that had scored only two offensive touchdowns and averaged 3.5 yards per play through the first three games, was inexcusable.
The Tribe allowed 52 points, 569 total yards, 428 rushing yards and 9.3 yards per carry against the Rams.
This was a conference game at home against one of the worst teams in the Patriot League, a game W&M needed to win to stay in the thick of the conference title race.
The defense failed this team drive after drive, and, frankly, the effort was embarrassing.
This defense has not performed well all season, allowing 462 yards per game and 7.0 yards per play through the first four weeks. Now, it has to take on one of the top offenses in the ACC.
The offense has struggled to find its identity this season and even attempted to change up the quarterback position to spark it. Winston Watkins started the first two games before Carter Carroll earned the nod against Lehigh. W&M then went back to Watkins, who has completed 67% of his passes for 799 yards and four touchdowns.
Andrew King serves as the primary running back and is averaging 6.1 yards per carry, with Watkins also providing a running threat from the quarterback position.
Kai Austin, Khylil Johnson and Luke Vanantwerp each have 10 or more catches this season and are the primary receiving options.
The offensive line has been the biggest problem this season, as the Tribe have surrendered a whopping 16 sacks and 36 tackles for loss in just four games.
This game against Duke will be a real test for this offense, which has scored 20 or more points in 13 straight games.
Duke Blue Devils Betting Preview
Duke has been an impressive group this season and comes into this game with a 3-0 record.
A road win over Illinois was followed by a dominant 35-7 victory over Stanford last week. The ground game is off and running, averaging 229 yards per game and 5.3 yards per carry. Nate Sheppard leads the backs with 528 yards and five touchdowns.
Quarterback Walker Eget has fit right in after transferring over from San Jose State, and the offensive line has been outstanding, allowing just one sack. This offense will have success against W&M on Saturday.
The defense has been equally impressive, specifically at home, where Duke is allowing five points per game. The defense has made strides compared to last season. The Havoc numbers are up, as Duke has registered seven sacks and 13 tackles for loss.
The front has been strong against the run with just 79 yards per game allowed on the ground. The Blue Devils have also been outstanding on third down, allowing just 10-of-37 successful third-down conversions.
Head coach Manny Diaz has really made strides with this defense, which was such a liability last season. The pass defense has improved, and the explosive plays allowed are way down compared to 2025.
Diaz mentioned wanting to play a heavy dose of rotational players on defense, so I'll be interested to see how successful the second platoon is against a W&M offense that has some potency.
William & Mary vs Duke Pick, Betting Analysis
This line opened with Duke listed as a 43.5-point favorite with a total of 61.5. While the derivative markets aren't yet out for this game, I project the first-half total at 34.5 and will seek to bet the over.
Duke will move the football at will against William & Mary, which has struggled defensively all season.
Diaz mentioned back-to-back sluggish starts against FCS opponents over the last two seasons, and the Blue Devils want to score early and often in this matchup.
I look for an elevated tempo from the offense and for the run game to consistently gash the Tribe defense. Last year, W&M had a much better defense and still surrendered 700 total yards and 379 rushing yards against Virginia in a game it trailed, 42-7, at halftime.
The Tribe have committed six turnovers this season, but numerous other mistakes have led to quick possessions, as W&M has been down big in the first half in each of its last two contests.
The William & Mary punt unit has struggled this season, and Duke has stressed special teams production this week in practice, so I wouldn't be shocked to see a big return or special teams touchdown set the Blue Devils up with a quick score.
The Tribe will have to throw the football here, and I suspect they'll take deep shots in this game. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Duke rotate some of its backups in early in this game and for the Tribe to connect on one of those deep shots.
While this play isn't predicated on W&M scoring in the first half, I wouldn't be stunned if it punched one in for a touchdown.
Duke will have its way with this FCS team, which has struggled on defense over the last two games. The second half could turn into a slower-paced, run-heavy game, but this first half should see points.
