We always knew this was coming, but now it's finally here.
Rivers Casino Portsmouth and Rush Street Gaming will mark a significant moment in the city’s development with a groundbreaking ceremony for The Landing Hotel Portsmouth on October 15.
This event signals the start of a new chapter in Portsmouth. The $65 million project is poised to enhance the casino's appeal and economic contribution to Portsmouth.
“A hotel was always part of the casino’s master plan, and we’re excited to be moving forward as expected. The Landing Hotel Portsmouth will be Rush Street’s fourth casino hotel, custom-designed for the greater Hampton Roads market," said Tim Drehkoff, CEO of Rush Street Gaming and Rivers Casino Portsmouth.
The casino is also celebrating a recent jackpot win that was generated by the rarest hand possible in standard poker. It also comes on the heels of the news that Virginia's entire casino industry has been on a remarkable run.
There are also ongoing discussions by lawmakers to legalize online casinos in Old Dominion.
Features of The Landing Hotel Portsmouth
The Landing Hotel Portsmouth is expected to improve the hospitality experience with its eight-story design, featuring 106 guest rooms.
Among these, 32 suites will offer luxurious accommodations, including “super suites” that exceed 800 square feet. Guests will enjoy amenities such as a large lobby, a ground-floor bar, and executive boardrooms.

The hotel will connect seamlessly to the casino through a covered corridor leading to the restaurants, gaming areas, and the 25,000-square-foot Event Center.
The project taps into local expertise, with Norfolk-based S.B. Ballard Construction serving as the general contractor. Privately funded by Rush Street Gaming, the hotel highlights a strategic push to bolster tourism and economic activity within Portsmouth, without any public subsidies.
The Landing Hotel Timeline
Construction is expected to be completed in early 2027.
As competitive pressures from nearby casinos intensify, this hotel is part of a plan to solidify Rivers Casino Portsmouth's market position.
The hope is that it will increase the number of overnight stays, broaden meeting capabilities, and host significant events, sustaining the casino’s role as a vital component of the local economy.
Rivers Casino Portsmouth: A Hub of Entertainment
Since its opening on January 23, 2023, Rivers Casino Portsmouth has become a central entertainment destination in Virginia.
The casino complex covers 400,000 square feet and features 1,446 slot machines, 57 table games, and a 24-table poker room. Guests can indulge in a diverse selection of dining options, including Admiral’s Steak & Seafood and Crossings Café, with more planned.

Beyond gaming, the complex features a substantial event center, retail spaces, and interactive venues, including the Topgolf Swing Suite, all supported by comprehensive safety measures, such as a private police substation.
It has already generated a significant economic impact, creating over 1,400 construction jobs, and is expected to provide around 1,300 permanent positions before it's all said and done.
The addition of The Landing Hotel completes the casino's long-term vision for regional growth, as well as enriching the casino’s facilities and solidifying its status as a cornerstone of the local economy and entertainment sector.
