Bears vs Seahawks Monday Night Football Preview
What a treat we are in store for two days after Halloween in a matchup of two true contenders in the NFC. For my money, this matchup features the best defensive mind in the NFL in Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald and the best offensive mind in Bears head coach Ben Johnson.
Their two previous meetings were extremely lopsided, with each getting the better of the other in blowout fashion.
In October 2023, Macdonald's defense in Baltimore completely suffocated Johnson's Lions offense in a 38-6 blowout victory. However, Johnson got his revenge the following season when Detroit put up 42 on Macdonald's Seahawks in a 13-point victory. In that game, Jared Goff finished a perfect 18-for-18 for 292 yards with two touchdowns and zero interceptions. It was an absolute offensive clinic.
I can't wait to see who takes the rubber match in the ultimate game of chess when Chicago has the ball.
Bears vs Seahawks Prediction, Betting Analysis
This is obviously good on good when Chicago has the ball and the opposite when Seattle is on offense.
Chicago's defense has plenty of holes. There's a reason the Bears rank dead last in the league in yards per play allowed.
However, it's a unit that should trend up as the season progresses with the addition of defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons, who fills a massive void in the interior of the defensive line. The Bears also recently got back one of the best nickels in the NFL in Kyler Gordon, who had three sacks in his first game in Atlanta.
Defensive coordinator Dennis Allen now has two elite chess pieces to utilize — and it's not like the task at hand will be overly difficult against a Seattle offense that hasn't been lighting the world on fire.
The Seahawks simply haven't been able to rush the ball effectively this season (ranking 29th in rush EPA) — though they are getting back Zach Charbonnet and Jadarian Price tonight. That has put Sam Darnold in more obvious late passing downs where he becomes susceptible to pressure, which Allen will certainly bring in those circumstances.
Seattle also appears to really miss former offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak from a playcalling perspective. Adding Quenton Nelson will provide a boost in the interior, but keep in mind the Seahawks will be without their starting left tackle Charles Cross and field stretcher Rashid Shaheed (who will also be missed on special teams) tonight.
Jaxon Smith-Njigba will certainly get his, but he's essentially the entire offense at the moment. I assume Seattle will lean into heavy personnel formations tonight, which Chicago has really struggled to defend over the past two seasons.
However, it should be a bit better equipped to handle with the addition of Simmons (we will see what kind of workload he gets) and the return of Gordon.
Getting back to the real chess match, which is when Chicago has the ball.
How can you move the ball successfully on this elite Seattle defense? For starters, you need playmakers on the outside, which Chicago certainly has in spades.
But you also need to make Macdonald's disguises matter less. That requires an effective quick passing game, effective use of playaction, motion, misdirection and some varied tempo.
Johnson utilizes all of those tools as well as anybody. And Caleb Williams is finally playing within the structure of the offense — there's a reason he ranks first in the NFL in completion percentage over expected (CPOE).
Last year, Williams finished 39th out of 45 quarterbacks with at least 250 plays. That's an enormous jump, as Williams has seemingly taken that next leap. However, he still has the ability to create off-script explosives, which will be critical against Macdonald's defense.
Almost nobody runs on Seattle, but if anybody can scheme up enough on the ground, it's Johnson.
I just don't trust the current version of the Seattle offense to win by margin, especially when you can almost bank on at least one Darnold critical mistake at this point. Plus, this might be the offense I trust the most at the moment to have some success against Seattle's defense.
This should be a very competitive game throughout and I could see it going either way, but I prefer taking the points. I would love the hook (even up to -125), but would be okay playing the Bears at a cheaper +3 as well.
Enjoy this one!
Pick: Bears +3.5 (to +3)
