It’s Christmas morning in September for Christian McCaffrey and a Giants defense that's allowing 136.5 rushing yards awaits him under the tree.
McCaffrey is off to a scorching-hot start, scampering for 268 yards through the first two weeks and outrushing the field by 88. He’s third in yards per carry at 6.4, but he has 12 more carries than the two players in front of him combined than Breece Hall and Austin Ekeler.
McCaffrey now faces a Giants team that hasn't forced a turnover or gotten a sack this season, and it has also surrendered five rushing scores, which is the second-most behind the Texans’ six.
The 49ers are cashing in at a 62.5% rate in the red zone — McCaffrey having contributed to that with a 14-yard run last week. The Giants are welcoming opposing red zone threats to reach pay dirt at a 71.2% rate, so the versatile back is sure to gain some extra ground when the 49ers are in range.
His longest runs against both the Steelers and Rams have been for a minimum of 51 yards. New York just awarded Tony Pollard and James Conner 109 and 106 yards, respectively.
In McCaffrey’s 2022 meeting against the Giants, he tallied 102 yards averaging 6.8 per carry. That was as part of a futile Panthers offense. Now let’s imagine him with a 49ers unit that’s been operating like clockwork.
The G-men should allow McCaffrey to run rampant on Thursday while chasing around Brock Purdy’s expansive cast of weapons.
