Sunday Night Football Preview
Note: All data is from FTN unless otherwise noted.
The Seahawks have exceeded all expectations this season, compiling a 5-2 record and ranking second in overall DVOA.
However, the Commanders enter this home matchup both underrated and desperate. Despite a 3-5 record and three missed games by Jayden Daniels, the Commanders rank 11th in overall DVOA.
The key for the Commanders is the return of Daniels, who has thrown eight touchdowns against just one interception; Marcus Mariota has tossed four TDs and four picks. Daniels has posted a 54.5% success rate and 11 first downs on the ground, compared to a 50.0% success rate and five first downs for Mariota.
Seattle runs a sound, zone-heavy scheme, so Daniels' willingness and ability to scramble even when the defense has eyes on him are paramount. Daniels leads all qualified quarterbacks with a 15.8% scramble rate versus zone coverage.
As for the Seahawks, Sam Darnold has been excellent this season — but this may be the peak of his value. Darnold averages 7.1 YPA for his career and can't be expected to keep up his 9.1 mark.
While Washington being without Terry McLaurin (quad) is nothing new — he's already missed four games — Darnold could be without pass-catchers of significance for the first time all season, as three-fifths of his wide receiving corps could miss tonight after Cooper Kupp (questionable- hamstring) was downgraded to a DNP on Friday, while Jake Bobo (Achilles) and Dareke Young (quad) have already been ruled out.
Washington plays man coverage at the 10th-highest rate (44.9%), and a man-heavy scheme is more vulnerable to wide receivers than tight ends or running backs.
