Canadiens vs. Lightning Preview

Montreal Canadiens

The Canadiens enter tonight needing to reclaim the momentum of what has been the most neck-and-neck series of the 2026 playoffs.

The first three games all required overtime, and Game 4 was decided by a razor-thin 3-2 margin. Montreal actually dominated the first half of Game 4 at 5-on-5, but they struggled to maintain that pace once Tampa Bay’s veterans turned up the heat in the third period.

The defensive pairing of Michael Matheson and Alex Carrier had a nightmare outing on Sunday, posting a 0.97 xGA, the worst mark of any duo in the game.

Without the luxury of the last change on the road, coach Martin St. Louis will need to be tactical to prevent the Lightning from hard-matching their elite top line against this struggling pair.

However, the Habs were elite on the road during the regular season (24-9-8), proving they have the composure to win in hostile environments.

Tampa Bay Lightning

The Lightning snuck out a win in Game 4 behind the heroics of Brandon Hagel, who registered both the game-tying and game-winning goals. Neutralizing the Hagel-Point-Kucherov line is now the top priority for Montreal. While Andrei Vasilevskiy remains the gold standard in net, he has actually struggled against high-danger chances this series.

But what's even more shocking is that neither team is generating high-danger looks at a typical playoff rate.

Tampa Bay has generated only five in the entire series, while Montreal has generated just three, the fewest of any playoff team. This low-event hockey makes every single bounce monumental, perfectly suiting a high-value underdog.

Canadiens vs. Lightning Prediction

This series feels destined to go seven games. Montreal has controlled the run of play for large stretches of this series, only to be undone by momentary lapses in Game 4.

Based on their exceptional road record and the system’s historical edge for lower seeds coming off a loss, the Canadiens are a fantastic candidate to steal Game 5 back in Tampa.

While Vasilevskiy has the name, Jakub Dobes has matched him save-for-save, posting nearly identical stats (Dobes 0.1 GSAx, .883 SV% vs. Vasilevskiy 0.8 GSAx, .882 SV%). The system recognizes that when the goaltending is this even, the +142 price tag is an overcorrection.

Expect a strategic chess match where Montreal's road-warrior mentality allows them to capitalize on Vasilevskiy’s uncharacteristic struggles with high-danger opportunities.

Pick: Montreal Canadiens ML (+142, FanDuel)
