Fever vs. Wings Preview
The Fever face off against Paige Bueckers and the Dallas Wings on Friday night in what should be a compelling matchup. The Fever are playing the back end of a back-to-back set and looking to rebound after dropping yesterday's matchup to the Sparks.
One of the major questions surrounding this game is the availability of Caitlin Clark.
Clark missed last night's game with a groin injury. Fever coach Stephanie White said, "I think it's very much a day-to-day thing, how she responds to treatment," after undergoing imaging on Wednesday. Clark last played on Tuesday, and if she sits tonight, she will have off until at least next Tuesday against the Lynx.
The offense is significantly worse without Clark — the Fever score 10.67 fewer points per 100 possessions, and they experience a drop-off in their assists and 3-pointers, per pbpstats.
One player in particular who struggles to score without Clark is Aliyah Boston. She scores 30.8 points per 100 with Clark compared to just 21.2 points per 100 without her. The drop-off is stark, and she has now scored 12 points or fewer in five of six games without her this season, averaging just 11.2 points compared to 18.6 with her.
If Clark plays, I would want an over on her points; however, I do not want the under despite the prior trends without her because Dallas is so soft on the interior.
I would rather target Kelsey Mitchell, who has not only played well against the Wings, but sees about a 9-point per 100 scoring spike without Clark.
Mitchell does not need Clark to set her up, whereas Boston struggles without those feeds. I'll grab over 18.5 points.
Fever vs. Wings Prediction
This game hinges on whether Clark plays, but considering the spread has moved from Indiana -7 to -2.5 over the last 24 hours, I do not expect her to play.
I'll back Mitchell tonight regardless. Last season, she scored 13, 36, and 30 points against Dallas, and she is averaging 18.6 ppg over her last 10 games.
