Aces vs. Wings Preview

The surging Aces head to Dallas on Monday night looking to continue one of the WNBA’s hottest stretches against a dangerous Wings squad capable of matching Las Vegas offensively.

Las Vegas has won six straight, scoring at least 100 points in each of the last three games. The Aces sit atop the league with 92.1 points per game and appear to be rounding into championship form.

Saturday’s 100-97 victory over the Lynx extended the Aces’ winning streak behind another dominant performance from A’ja Wilson, who finished with 24 points and 10 rebounds. The triumph ended Minnesota’s eight-game winning streak and lifted Las Vegas to 5-0 in the Commissioner’s Cup Western Conference standings with a pair of contests left, including this matchup with Dallas.

The top team from each conference advances to the Cup final on June 30, where defending champion New York paces the East.

Wilson continues to stand out as one of the best players of her generation, averaging 26.2 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks. The overwhelming favorite to win both a fifth league MVP and fourth Defensive Player of the Year honor recently became the fastest WNBA player to pass the 6,000-point plateau.

Las Vegas has also received strong secondary scoring throughout the lineup.

Jackie Young is averaging 15.4 points and 6.8 assists, while Chelsea Gray has added 13.3 points and 6.8 assists per game. Key reserve Chennedy Carter has emerged as a leading Sixth Player of the Year candidate with 14.4 points per contest, though she will miss this game with an illness.

Gray has caught fire from a distance lately. The veteran guard has knocked down 15 3-pointers over her last two games, including a league record nine triples against the Fire. Gray netted 23 points versus the Lynx.

The Wings have dropped two of three since a four-game winning streak. The latest loss was an 84-83 setback in Portland on Saturday. The game slipped away from Dallas in the final moments after Azzi Fudd’s free throw to put the Wings ahead by two with 18.7 seconds remaining represented their last lead. Arike Ogunbowale led all scorers with 22 points.

Leading scorer Paige Bueckers (19.8 PPG, 5.8 APG) missed that matchup with right ankle soreness, but the MVP candidate is expected to return to the lineup to face the Aces.

Ogunbowale (14.5 PPG, Jessica Shepard (13.6 PPG, 11.3 RPG), and Fudd (12.4 PPG), the league’s first overall draft pick, are reliable contributors.

The Aces and Wings squared off once this season, a 95-87 Wings win in Dallas on May 28. The Wings outscored the Aces by 16 points in the second half as Bueckers, Shepard, and Fudd each reached 20 points.

Shepard’s game was one for the ages as she posted 22 points, a career-high 20 rebounds, and 10 assists for her second triple-double of the year. She is the favorite to receive the WNBA’s Most Improved Player recognition.

The Dallas win was a nice response to losing five straight times to Las Vegas last season.

Aces vs. Wings Prediction

Chelsea Gray’s points prop feels mispriced for this matchup, especially with Chennedy Carter sidelined.

Action Pro projects Gray for 13.36 points, giving her a 15.6% edge over her listed total of 11.5.

Gray has scored at least 12 points in all five Commissioner’s Cup games this month while consistently taking between 10 and 15 shots per night. During that span, she’s averaging eight 3-point attempts.

The last time Gray faced Dallas, she managed only eight points while shooting just 2-of-10 from the field for one of her least efficient outings of the season.

Blame it on shooting variance.

With Las Vegas playing at a blistering offensive pace, Gray should once again have plenty of opportunities to clear this number.

Best Bet: Chelsea Gray Over 11.5 Points (-111, DraftKings)
