Mercury vs. Fever Preview
The Mercury have continued to climb the standings, now holding the third overall seed, with a chance to catch the Liberty for the second spot.
On the flip side, the Fever have continued to slip and sit at 14-12, good for sixth in the league.
They have felt the absence of Caitlin Clark severely. Clark (groin) has no timetable for her return, but the Fever have managed without her due to their defensive improvements, even if the offense is a bit less efficient.
One of the primary beneficiaries of Clark's absence has been Kelsey Mitchell. Her scoring has jumped from 25 points per 100 possessions with Clark to 37, per pbpstats. She's one of the few smaller guards who has had zero difficulty getting to her spots and finishing through contact at every level. She's exceeded 20 points in seven of her past ten games as well while averaging 22.9 PPG during the stretch.
Despite the Mercury's strengths, this has been a good matchup for lead guards. Sabrina Ionescu (29), Allisha Gray (28) and Courtney Williams (21) have all exceeded their prop lines recently against the Mercury.
The Mercury and the Fever have not faced off against each other yet this season. Despite Clark's extended absences this season, the Fever have a better Net Rating on the season than the Mercury. Additionally, the Mercury have slid a bit over their last five games with a 2-3 record and -5.5 Net Rating; they've been in bad form recently.
Even though this spread has climbed a bit from Mercury -2 to -3.5, this is a game that certainly could go either way, and a competitive game is excellent for props.
