Your view of this bet likely comes down to how much you trust Tigers rookie Troy Melton. Melton will be making his MLB debut in a spot start for the dad-to-be Tarik Skubal. Melton's minor league numbers have been dominant: a 32.4% K% across Double-A and Triple-A this season, 101 strikeouts in just 75.1 innings, and a 7% or lower walk rate at every level. Projection systems have Melton closer to a 4.00 to 4.50 ERA major league player as opposed to the 2.99 ERA he's had this year in the minors, which makes sense. We don't know what we'll get from him today, but I'll back him against a Pirates offense that is averaging just 3.37 runs per game this season, lowest in the majors. Yes, they did explode for 8 runs yesterday and are a win away from sweeping the series. I have both bullpens graded similarly and the Tigers' offense projected for about half a run higher against Bailey Falter than the Pirates' offense, so I'll back Detroit to avoid the sweep.
