There's still time for the Houston Astros to dig out of a 12-22 hole, but the three-time defending AL West champions need to start winning soon before it's too late. The Astros travel to the Bronx on Tuesday night to face the New York Yankees, who sit one game out of first place in the AL East.
Houston not only looks to snap a two-game slide, but it will also try to avenge a four-game sweep at the hands of the Bronx Bombers to start the season.
The latest Astros vs Yankees odds have the Yankees as -125 moneyline favorites, with an over/under of 8.5. The starting pitching matchup features Justin Verlander for the Astros and Luis Gil for the Yankees.
Let's get into my MLB betting preview for the series opener between these two rivals and my Astros vs Yankees prediction on the moneyline.
The Astros are in the midst of a 1-8 skid on the road with the only victory coming at Washington on April 19.
Justin Verlander started in that game for Houston and delivered six innings of two-run ball in a 5-3 victory in his season debut.
Verlander is winless in his last two starts against the Cubs and Guardians in a pair of low-scoring games. The former Cy Young winner struck out a season-high seven batters in less than five innings of a 3-1 loss at Chicago while tossing seven innings in an extra-innings defeat to Cleveland.
Tonight will be the first time Verlander is listed as an underdog this season after Houston dropped four games to New York in the opening series.
The Astros led after five innings in three of those losses, as the bullpen let them down in each of those defeats.
Houston has won four of its last five series openers. The only road victory in that stretch came in Verlander's start at Washington last month.
Last season, the Astros posted a 4-1 record in Verlander's final five starts in the underdog role.

The Yankees bounced back from a rough series loss at Baltimore by pulling off a three-game home sweep of the Tigers this past weekend.

Gil has yielded three earned runs in two home starts — wins over the Blue Jays and Rays. Both of Gil's home outings have gone over the total, as New York posted a four-run inning against Tampa Bay and a five-run inning against Toronto.
The Yankees have not given up a run in the first five innings in five home series openers this season, but New York also hasn't scored a run in the first five in any of its last three home Game 1s.

There's no doubt that Gil has been the surprise of this New York rotation and has been impressive whenever he takes the mound.
However, Verlander is tough to pass up as an underdog, especially off a pair of losses a favorite in his last two starts.
Also taking into account the four losses to New York to start the season, Houston should be motivated here to get things turned around.
