Rays vs Brewers MLB Betting Preview
After opting to provide Drew Rasmussen with an extra day of rest to set up a Game 1 pitching matchup of Nick Martinez versus Jacob Misiorowski, the Rays were always fighting an uphill battle. Tampa Bay closed near +160 at most sportsbooks and gave itself a legitimate chance to steal the game, which would have flipped the series odds significantly.
A win in Game 2 with their ace on the mound and it's still a highly successful start to the series for the underdog Rays. Rasmussen has been excellent thus far this postseason, as throughout 21 innings of work he's pitched to an ERA of 1.29 with an xFIP of 2.42. He walks very few batters and can effectively be aggressive in the zone with a high-quality five-pitch mix, though the Brewers' ability to hit fastballs effectively and fight off tough pitches will offer a much more difficult test than he has seen thus far this postseason.
Many of the strengths of the Rays' offense were on display in Game 1, as they were able to work Misiorowski into some tough situations, and struck out just three times versus the presumptive NL Cy Young winner.
Junior Caminero lined into a crucial double play to end the first inning, while Victor Mesa made a costly mistake by trying to steal third with Yandy Díaz at the plate to end the fifth inning, when it once again felt as though they had Misiorowski in a tough spot. Still, the Rays looked true to form, grinding out scrappy at-bats against elite pitching.
Tampa Bay held a wRC+ of 110 versus righties this season, as well as a wRC+ of 110 versus righties in the second half.
Logan Henderson was fantastic in his first full season at the MLB level during the regular season, as he pitched to an ERA of 2.47 with a 3.30 xFIP. Relative to his level of dominance, he held a fairly modest Stuff+ rating of 102, but unsurprisingly the Brewers seemed to optimize his pitch mix, and he certainly received a bit of a boost from the team's elite fielding as well.
Throughout a small sample of nine innings this postseason, Henderson holds an xFIP of 5.61 and struck out just 6.00 batters per nine. His Pitching+ rating has also dipped to 95.
As with the majority of starters, Henderson's effectiveness dropped off working through the order for a third time this season, and we will likely see Pat Murphy stick with the strategy of pulling starters early to lean into their incredible bullpen once again in Game 2. Henderson holds a betting total of just 14.5 outs, after recording 12 and 15 outs in his first two starts of the postseason.
As we touched on ahead of the Brewers' series clinching win versus the Dodgers, the lineup has been relentless this postseason and has continually worked excellent AB's versus elite pitchers. They were one of just three teams to hit righties more effectively than Tampa Bay during the regular season, and will provide Rasmussen with the toughest test he has seen this postseason.

Rays vs Brewers Pick, Betting Analysis
The Rays obviously felt confident that an extra day of rest for Rasmussen, who typically worked on 5+ days of rest in the regular season, would increase his chances of managing another excellent start. Rasmussen has had a fantastic start to the postseason, after pitching to an ERA of 1.86 across 12 starts following the All-Star break.
Henderson was obviously also an elite pitcher this season, but the quality of his stuff has dipped slightly amid a small sample this postseason, which does correlate with his reduced strikeout rate and .288 xBA. Given the sample size those numbers don't mean everything, but it does seem reasonable to give Rasmussen the edge considering how untouchable he's been over the last two months.
At -110 there looks to be value in backing the Rays to win the first five innings, and I'd bet it down to -115.
Pick: Rays F5 Moneyline (-110. DraftKings; Play to -115)
