Red Sox vs Athletics MLB Betting Preview
Editor's Note: This written pick is a transcription from today's episode of the Payoff Pitch Podcast.
Both of these young lefties get to their results in different ways. Jake Bennett is the location-and-command guy — a 115 location-plus rating but just a 92 stuff-plus figure. He doesn't have elite stuff on paper, but he generates weak contact well enough to play a bit better than the models suggest.
That said, he's still overachieved this year: a 2.58 ERA against a SIERA north of 4.7 — nearly a run-and-a-half gap between his results and his underlying indicators. An 18% strikeout rate isn't going to sustain a sub-3 ERA.
Gage Jump, on the other hand, is the stuff guy — a 110 stuff-plus rating but just a 99 location-plus rating. His 4.4 ERA aligns with his 4.2 expected ERA. Both project as close to league-average starters (ranked 70th and 72nd, respectively), just getting there in different ways.
Red Sox have the better lineup, with both Shea Langeliers and Nick Kurtz currently on the IL for the Athletics — Langeliers likely done for the year. Red Sox also have a clear bullpen advantage (3rd-ranked vs. 24th). The A's are struggling badly with nothing to play for down the stretch.
This number was too big at +135 last night. I make this game +112 for the Athletics — I'd bet the Athletics down to +122. Bad teams like the A's and Rockies tend to get an extra "tax" as we get deeper into summer, with lines drifting further toward the favorite closer to game time.
Pick: Athletics ML (+122 or Better)
