Braves vs Padres MLB Betting Preview

Atlanta Braves Betting Preview

This season, the Braves' offense is leading the way, as it's seventh in runs scored. However, over the last two weeks, the Braves have fallen to 29th in runs scored. They're just 3-9 in that span and will be looking to avoid getting swept in this series.

When healthy, the Braves' offense is among the best in baseball, but the "when healthy" caveat has been an issue.

Former MVP Ronald Acuna Jr. has been in and out of the lineup and is currently on the IL with a left hamstring strain. After initially being expected to return this week, manager Walt Weiss said he is a "long way" from coming back. It wouldn't be a surprise if he was held out until after the All-Star break.

Catcher Sean Murphy has been out most of the season, while Drake Baldwin had an IL stint with an oblique injury. Baldwin returned last week, but he's recorded just one hit since hitting a mammoth 473-foot home run in his first at-bat off the injured list.

In the meantime, the Braves will continue to look to Ozzie Albies and Michael Harris II to pace the offense.

Albies is hitting .348 with two home runs, five runs batted in and a 1.037 OPS over the last week. Those two home runs helped the Braves walk-off against the Brewers on Saturday.

Harris has four doubles in his last four games and is hitting .321 in June. With 14 home runs and 42 runs batted in on the year, he's on pace for a career year, which may result in his first All-Star appearance.

San Diego Padres Betting Preview

Though the Braves' bats have been quiet of late, they may wake up on Wednesday. The Padres are recalling JP Sears to make his first start of the season. In 2025, he was 9-11 with a 5.04 ERA and his time in Triple-A hasn't been much better. This season, Sears is 4-3 with a 7.92 ERA in 63 2/3 innings.

It's worth considering that the Pacific Coast League is considered an offensive environment with several hitter-friendly parks. However, you would still expect a veteran MLB pitcher to have better success.

While Sears will likely enjoy the dimensions of Petco Park, he's already given up at least two hits to Harris, Matt Olson, Austin Riley and Mauricio Dubon.

Meanwhile, the Padres will face Martin Perez, who continues to perform above expectations. Though his expected FIP, ERA and SIERA all range between 3.86 and 4.12, Perez has a 2.78 ERA with 56 strikeouts in 68 frames this season.

He's given the Braves five innings in each of his last six starts, allowing two runs or fewer in four of them.

However, Manny Machado is 7-for-20 (.350) with a double and home run against Perez and he typically has feasted against left-handed pitching in his career. That has held true this season despite his struggles at the plate, as he's hitting .250 against left-handed pitchers compared to .164 against right-handers.

Machado provided the only source of offense in Monday's game, as his solo home run in the fourth inning was all the Padres would need for a 1-0 victory.

Fernando Tatis Jr. has gone through his own struggles at the plate this season, not homering until late May. However, he's hitting .337 with an .877 OPS in June, while recording a hit in 16 of his past 20 games.

Braves vs Padres Pick, Betting Analysis

One thing that I've noticed over the years is that teams typically have an added level of motivation when they're on the verge of getting swept.

That's worked in reverse for the Braves this season. They're 19-6-1 in series' this season, but they've recorded a sweep in just three of them, most recently missing an opportunity to sweep the Brewers on Sunday.

Now, they find themselves on the verge of being swept by the Padres, but they have the pitching matchup in their favor. Sears has struggled regardless of the level he's been at over the last couple of years.

Meanwhile, Perez has been just solid enough to give the Braves quality innings before turning it over to the league's best bullpen. Additionally, the Padres have hit just .221 against left-handed pitchers this season.

The Braves were able to score six runs last night in the loss. If they get six or more on Wednesday, I like their chances to avoid the sweep.

Pick: Braves ML (-120, DraftKings)
