Doug Ziefel’s Brewers vs Blue Jays Preview
In a series that has pitted two of the hottest teams in baseball against one another, the Milwaukee Brewers have asserted their dominance, taking the first two games of the series. However, they are slight underdogs entering this finale despite having the starting pitching advantage.
Getting the ball for them this afternoon is Brandon Woodruff. Woodruff has been plagued by injuries the last few seasons, but appears to have not missed a beat since returning in July.
Through nine starts, he holds a 3.10 ERA with 0.87 WHIP, and has shown no signs of slowing down. He appears to be up to the task of a Blue Jays lineup that has done exceedingly well against righties, as not only does he produce soft contact, but his CSW is equal to Tarik Skubal's.
On the other side of this matchup, the Blue Jays veteran starting rotation has bolstered their run in the second half, and there's no better embodiment of that than Max Scherzer. The 41-year-old future Hall of Famer has turned back the clock, pitching to a 3.82 ERA and 1.06 WHIP in 12 starts.
While Scherzer is producing fewer whiffs now than at any point in his career, he's still been able to generate soft contact. While that has been his saving grace, his 4.64 FIP and 58.7 percent flyball rate suggest regression is coming in a major way.
However, in the event that we see some of that today, the Blue Jays' bullpen is well rested and ready to put out the fire when called upon.
Brewers vs Blue Jays Prediction, Betting Analysis
With fall fast approaching and these two teams at the top of their game, this could be a preview of what we see in October. This series finale is going to highlight the depth of each pitching staff as they navigate two of the most difficult lineups in all of baseball.
I'm expecting some hiccups from Scherzer in this one, but with his leash likely to be shortened, we shouldn't see Milwaukee blow this one open. Meanwhile, Woodruff has asserted himself as the ace of the staff and is primed to make a statement this afternoon by containing the Jays.
