Mets vs Phillies MLB Betting Preview

New York Mets Betting Preview

The Mets and Phillies are playing a three-game series, but over four days, and thanks to a scheduling quirk, both teams got a rare Friday night off. The Mets took the opener 6-4 on Thursday as Juan Soto led the way with a pair of solo home runs.

With 17 home runs on the year, Soto ranks seventh in the National League despite missing 17 games. He leads the NL in slugging percentage, OPS and wRC+.

He has been particularly locked in of late, slashing .483/.583/1.000 with three doubles, four home runs, and eight runs batted in over his last eight games. The Mets are 5-3 in that span, but are underdogs tonight with Cristopher Sanchez starting for the Phillies.

The Mets will counter with Freddy Peralta, whom they acquired from the Brewers this offseason. While the Mets were in need of an ace, Peralta has been closer to league average. He has a 3.90 ERA, a 3.73 expected ERA, and a 22.7% strikeout rate, with 81 strikeouts in 83 innings.

Peralta does rank in the 80th percentile, allowing just a 5.4% barrel rate. That could come in handy with the wind blowing out to right field tonight.

Philadelphia Phillies Betting Preview

The Phillies will be looking to snap a two-game losing streak, and they will turn to Cristopher Sanchez to lead the way. Sanchez is coming off a loss himself as he allowed four earned runs in 5 and 2/3 innings in a 4-0 loss in Milwaukee. However, he has been particularly dominant at home, where he has a 0.90 ERA in nine starts.

Soto has been the rare left-handed hitter to find success against Sanchez, as he is 5-for-14 against him, but he has almost neutralized left-handers completely this season.

Against Sanchez, left-handed hitters have just one home run, a 37.8% strikeout rate, 2% walk rate, and .361 OPS. Sanchez's changeup has been elite this season once again as it produced a 47% whiff rate and 43% strikeout rate.

Sanchez is 8-3 on the year, and in those three losses, the Phillies have scored just one run. Their offense has been inconsistent because it has been particularly carried by their left-handed bats.

With Trea Turner and Adolis Garcia struggling and now Garcia out for the year, Philadelphia will be looking for a right-handed bat before the trade deadline.

However, Alec Bohm has picked it up of late after an abysmal start. Over the last two weeks, he has three home runs, 16 RBI, and a .914 OPS. Though he has still struggled on the road, he has been above average at home with a .761 OPS.

Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper are typically the lefties who carry Philadelphia's offense. They have combined for 40 home runs, and given the wind tonight, both of them are in play tonight. Nine of Peralta's 10 home runs allowed have been against left-handed hitters.

Another left-handed bat who has joined them is Brandon Marsh, who is having a career year. He is slashing .317/.352/.492 with nine home runs and 35 RBI. He will be looking to get back in the hit column after going 0-for-4 on Thursday, but he is hitting .368 at home.

Mets vs Phillies Pick, Betting Analysis

The Phillies are 10-5 when Sanchez pitches this season and 7-2 at home. He has recorded six strikeouts in 12 of 15 starts this season, including all nine at home.

He has averaged 7.9 strikeouts per game at home this season and the Mets are 15th in strikeout rate against left-handed this season.

Another way to back him is to record a win. However, on DraftKings, this combo has slightly better odds and would also win if Sanchez gets a no-decision, but the Phillies win after he gets his Ks.

Pick: Cristopher Sanchez 6+ Strikeouts / Phillies Moneyline (-135, DraftKings)
