Doug Ziefel’s Yankees vs Reds Preview
In their win on Sunday against the Orioles, the Yankees got the bats going a little too late for our pick. However, their pitching did meet expectations and is now in a great spot to begin this road series.
The bullpen will likely be leaned on in this matchup, as Allan Winans is getting the call-up to make his ninth career start. Things at the big league level didn't go great for Winans in Atlanta, as he comes into this outing with a career 7.20 ERA and 1.58 WHIP.
He seems to have figured something out in Triple-A with the Yankees, though, as his numbers are impeccable. In 11 outings, Winans went 7-0 with a 0.90 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP while racking up 59 strikeouts.
Winans excels at inducing soft contact and generating groundballs, as he's a traditional sinker-slider guy with his primary pitch being his change-up. He'll be a unique challenge for a Reds lineup that's average against righties while striking out quite a bit.
On the flip side of this matchup, the Reds have been treading water lately, as they're six games over .500 and sit 4.5 games back in the NL Central.
Tonight, a key piece to their success is getting the ball to starter Nick Lodolo.
Lodolo's young career has been riddled with injuries, and we've seen him go from a potential top-end rotation starter with high strikeout upside to an average arm that's been more fortunate than good. We've seen his strikeout rate fall by nine percent since he debuted in 2022.
Lodolo faces a tall task, as the Yankees have hit lefties exceedingly well this season. We know this lineup can mash, and Lodolo has shown that he'll attack the zone, so expect New York to be aggressive in the early going.
While New York should get to Lodolo, the Reds' bullpen is an even bigger concern. This is a group that already shipped off its best arm in Alexis Diaz and is 24th in bullpen ERA.
With the temperatures rising, we should see Great American Ballpark turn into a hitter's paradise, and that's more likely to help the Yankees' bats than the Reds.
Yankees vs Reds Prediction, Betting Analysis
We're getting a sizable road discount here on the Yankees that we must capitalize on. The conditions in Cincinnati tonight are going to make this a high-scoring affair, and the Yankees are much more equipped to win a slugfest.
However, we've yet to see this new and improved version of Allan Winans at the big league level. If Winans is on, he'll keep the ball in the yard, which should allow the Yankees to jump ahead early and pile on as the game goes along.
Back the Yankees to take this series opener.
