Padres vs Phillies MLB Betting Preview
It was not long ago that the Padres were nearly dead even with the Dodgers in the NL West. However, the Dodgers have won eight of their last 10 games while the Padres have dropped seven of their last 10 games, and they now find themselves six games back in the NL West. However, they have still performed a little above expectation, considering they have a 29-30 expected record and -7 run differential.
They can also thank the Phillies for their recent skid. They were swept by the Phillies in San Diego last week at home and dropped the first game 3-2 last night. They have scored just five runs against the Phillies this season, and they are 0-27 with runners in scoring position over their last four games. Their assignment will not get any easier with Cristopher Sanchez getting the start for the Phillies tonight.
However, they did get a dose of offense on Sunday as Fernando Tatis Jr. finally hit his first home run of the year against the Nationals. Tatis has a career-low .675 OPS this season, but he has also been one of the unluckiest hitters in the MLB. He is above average in exit velocity and barrel rate, ranking in the 94th percentile in hard-hit percentage. He has typically fared well against left-handed pitchers, and he is 7-for-14 with a home run against Sanchez.
Walker Buehler will get the start for the Padres, and he has worked five innings or more in each of his last five starts. The Padres won four of them, with him collecting two wins himself. However, a lack of run support doomed him against the Phillies last time out.
Bryce Harper tied the game last night with a two-run homer in the fourth inning. It was his 14th of the season, and he is now just 23 away from 400 for his career. With another big month, he will likely end June with 20 home runs, joining his teammate Kyle Schwarber, as they are also the only Phillies with over 10 home runs thus far this season.
The Phillies got five innings from Aaron Nola, who allowed two runs and struck out eight. It was a very encouraging outing for him, considering his struggles this season. He left with a 2-2 tie, and Alec Bohm put the Phillies ahead with a rare go-ahead double play in the sixth inning before Jhoan Duran struck out the side in the ninth for his 13th save of the season.
After a dreadful start, the Phillies have played themselves back into playoff contention as they are just one game out of a wildcard spot. However, they are still 9.5 games back of the Braves in the NL East, so there is work to be done there. If they score three tonight, that may be enough for a win, given Sanchez's form of late.
Sanchez is the reigning NL Pitcher of the Month after he went through without allowing a single earned run while striking out 45 in 39 innings. His scoreless innings streak is now up to 44 2/3 innings, and he has lowered his ERA to 1.47 this season. Sanchez also has 4.2 WAR, and he finds himself in the middle of what could be a historic NL Cy Young Award race.

Padres vs Phillies Pick, Betting Analysis
The Phillies have won seven of the last 10 meetings, including five straight. In all seven wins, the Phillies held the Padres to three runs or fewer, and the under has hit in eight of those meetings as well. Both trends figure to continue with Sanchez starting, as he is 4-1 with a 1.62 ERA in his career against San Diego. Even assuming Sanchez’s streak comes to an end, it is hard to see the Padres doing much against him.
We still get a nice price on the Phillies moneyline and under 7.5 runs. The Phillies are 8-4 in Sanchez's starts this season, and four of his six personal wins came in games that finished with eight runs or fewer.
Pick: Phillies Moneyline + Under 7.5 (+174, FanDuel)
