Los Angeles Lakers Betting Preview

The Lakers are coming off a defeat to the Trail Blazers as 1.5-point favorites. While it's still early, Portland could be one of the year's surprise teams, given its 3-0 start.

I must admit, this Lakers loss caught me off guard because they were at full strength and playing at home. Now, they'll face a quick turnaround with a back-to-back against a well-rested Clippers team that hasn't played since Sunday.

Ironically, we're only in the second week of the NBA season, and we've already got a rematch in the Battle of L.A. The Lakers needed a big third-quarter performance to get back into position to win 125-117 after trailing by double-digit points.

Because the Lakers are playing on consecutive nights, NBA rules state they don't have to submit an official injury report until 1 P.M. local time on game day.

Interestingly, this point spread opened with the Lakers laying as 5.5-point favorites, and now that number is down to -4.5. With two legitimate scorers in Luka Doncic (36.0 PPG) and Austin Reaves (26.5 PPG), the Lakers should have enough firepower if they give one or two players the night off.

In comparison, Darius Garland (24.0 PPG) is the only Clippers player averaging 20 or more points, while Brook Lopez is the team's second-leading scorer (18.0 PPG), and he's doing his damage coming off the bench.

As a result, this matchup feels like a game of fine margins when you consider the impact of fatigue on a team that's clearly more talented than its opponent on paper.

Los Angeles Clippers Betting Preview

Although the Clippers lost the earlier meeting, they still covered the +8.5 point spread. The Clips are one of four teams in the league still with a perfect record against the spread.

Since the start of the season, I've been tracking team performance against their win totals, and the Clippers have been one of the biggest surprises, with an expected points margin almost three times what early projections suggested.

Sunday's narrow 108-101 defeat to the Thunder was an eye-opener for a team that was as high as 16.5-point underdogs.

Some might say this Clippers organization has undergone a bit of addition by subtraction after trading Kawhi Leonard (27.9 PPG) to Toronto. John Collins (13.6 PPG) was another significant departure, considering the forward opted to sign with Detroit as a free agent.

Los Angeles did get some depth in return for the Leonard trade, with Brandon Ingram and Gradey Dick coming over as part of the deal, along with unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, a pick swap in 2027, and two second-rounders (2030 and 2033).

One addition that might fly under the radar is the signing of free agent forward Rui Hachimura. Hachimura is one of three Clippers starters averaging double figures (10.3 PPG), so his absence on Wednesday night due to a quad injury could be a significant loss.

His on-court knowledge of the Lakers' offense will also be missed, given he played 3.5 seasons with the Purple and Gold.

As things stand, my model currently sides with the Clippers, projecting the Lakers closer to a 3.5-point favorite.

However, I'm less willing to pull the trigger on a team that won't be at full strength with such a tight margin.
