Pistons vs 76ers NBA Preview
Since losing to the Bulls in their season opener, the Pistons have won seven of their last eight games. They now sit atop the Eastern Conference early on after defeating the Nets 125-107 on Friday night for their first NBA Cup win. Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren each scored 30 points and had double-doubles in Friday's victory.
During the Pistons five-game winning streak, Cunningham is averaging 29.8 points and 11.2 assists while shooting 54% from the field. Meanwhile, Duren has scored 20 points in five of his last seven games. Even more importantly, he continues to improve defensively and the Pistons have a +13.3 net rating when he is on the floor.
Head coach JB Bickerstaff will need another dominant effort from Duren as the Pistons will be shorthanded in the frontcourt. Center/power forward Isaiah Stewart left Friday's game with an ankle injury, and is doubtful for tonight's game. They will also remain without Tobias Harris (ankle), who will miss this game against his former team.
The Pistons will not have to deal with Joel Embiid tonight, as he will sit on the second night of the back-to-back. Embiid scored a season-high 29 points on 10-for-16 from the field in 26 minutes. Tyrese Maxey had 31 points and seven assists as he remains on a heater to begin this season.
The real surprise of the night came from Trendon Watford, who had 20 points, 17 rebounds, and 10 assists for the first triple-double of his career. However, he had been building towards this as he had 16 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists against Brooklyn last Sunday. The Sixers will need him to step up again as Adem Bona and Andre Drummond will man the middle tonight.
With Philadelphia's win last night, it pulled into a four-way tie for the third spot in the Eastern Conference. It will be the first of two meetings between the teams this week, as Friday's game will have NBA Cup implications. The matchup will pit Philadelphia's top-ranked offense against the Pistons' third-ranked defense.
Pistons vs 76ers Prediction, Betting Analysis
Following last night's performance, Watford has scored at least 15 points in three of his last four games. He has had at least nine rebounds in two of those games and six assists or more in three of them. As a result, Watford has now recorded 22 PRA in three of his last four games while averaging 29.5 per game.
Embiid did not play in two of those games and without him, there will be at least 15 field goal attempts available as the Sixers play at a faster pace. That also means another high usage game for Maxey in the cards. Maxey has recorded 39 PRA in all nine games this season, going over 40 in eight of them.
Duren has not enjoyed the best games of his career against the 76ers because he has usually dealt with foul trouble going against Embiid. However, without that worry tonight, I like him to continue his recent form with another 20-point outing. The 76ers are allowing the second-most points to centers this season.
The Pistons' two-man game with Cunningham and Duren could be very effective tonight as the Sixers are allowing the second-highest shot frequency to pick-and-roll men. That should help Cunningham pick up a few easy dimes as he has had eight assists in eight of his first nine games. That has helped him record at least 35 points and assists in each of his last five games, even when he has started slow. Cunningham is leading the league in fourth quarter scoring this season.
