Portland Trail Blazers Preview

The Trail Blazers possess an explosive offense, but their defense is what has genuinely caught my attention early in the season. Portland is a very balanced basketball team.

Despite facing a pretty tough strength of schedule from an opposing offense perspective, the Blazers currently boast a top-10 defensive rating at 109.0.

We all saw what happened in the season opener, where the Blazers completely blotted out the sun and tore Phoenix to pieces.

While that specific game was an extreme outlier, Portland has the structural integrity and perimeter personnel to make things difficult in the half-court once again.

Phoenix Suns Preview

The Suns are off to a brutal start on the defensive end, currently holding the worst defensive rating in the entire NBA at a staggering 124.0.

I know that is not an awesome start, but I don't believe they will remain the worst defensive team in the league by the time we hit December. They have the personnel to contain the perimeter much better than they have shown.

Offensively, Phoenix sits at 11th in the league, but that number feels deceptive after playing teams like Denver, who are deceptively easy to score on right now.

The tactical issue tonight is that this game will feature a heavy dose of drop coverage. Devin Booker, Dillon Brooks, and Jalen Green have all been statistically terrible against drop coverage this season, which means they'll struggle to find clean, efficient looks.

Trail Blazers vs Suns Pick, Analysis

I am going with the Under 228.5 in this matchup. I actually project this total all the way down to 221, which gives us a huge 7.5-point margin of mathematical value on the board.

With Portland's defense legitimately playing at a top-10 level and Phoenix's primary scorers historically struggling to navigate drop coverage, the offensive possessions are going to grind down.

I fully expect the Suns to step up and positively regress on the defensive end, forcing this game into a much tighter, lower-scoring affair than the current market total implies.

Trail Blazers vs Suns Trade: Under 228.5 (54 cents, Kalshi)
