UAB Basketball

The Blazers' guard play should be more reliable this year. I don't love this matchup for the smaller UAB guards, though. Ahmad Robinson is a monster and a stat-stuffer, but he's just 5-foot-10 and will have to finish over much taller NC State defenders.

The best part of Robinson's game is driving, which the Pack's length could limit.

Adding to UAB's small backcourt is Jacob Meyer, who can fill it up in the scoring column. He had 22 in the season opener versus Mississippi Valley State, but he'll struggle to defend NC State's bigger guards.

Chance Westry will be the X-factor for UAB this season. The former top-100 recruit scored 23 points in his team's debut.

It'll be a real battle of tempos. If the Blazers have it their way, they'll be in a full-court game with a ton of possessions.

The Blazers' interior could prove to be at a disadvantage in this matchup, though. They're a bit smaller in general, as KyeRon Lindsay-Martin is the starting five-man at only 6-foot-8. Then at the four is 6-foot-7 Daniel Rivera.

If either of the two could shoot, I'd feel better about the combo. But neither are shooters, which could lead to shaky spacing on the floor.

NC State Basketball

Will Wade began his tenure in Raleigh with a bang, beating NC Central, 114-66.

I came away very impressed by the overall talent on the Wolfpack's roster. Darrion Williams is the preseason ACC Player of the Year, and Ven-Allen Lubin is a proven high-major big.

Those aren't a surprise, but Matt Able and Paul McNeil will make NC State better than I thought it would be.

We got a great glimpse of how Wade plans to use Williams. He's going to be the primary playmaker for the Pack, as he posted 19 points with nine assists in the opener. He might be a "big," but he's really a big guard.

Able is a top-50 recruit who scored 14 points with four assists, and McNeil scored 16 points. That pair will benefit greatly from the playmaking Williams provides.

The Wolfpack also have strong positional size. Tre Holloman is the smallest starter at 6-foot-2, and every other starter is 6-foot-5 or taller. That'll make this NC State team tough to match up with.

NC State also has a unit that can go legitimately 10 or 11 players deep. That'll be a key part of NC State's outlook.

Plus, it features a good blend of youth and experience. Four of the five starters are seniors, with McNeil, a sophomore, being the lone non-senior.

UAB vs. NC State Betting Analysis

I'm laying the points with the home team.

NC State is a bit underrated in my view. The mix of guard talent and a versatile forward in Williams could put this shaky UAB defense on skates.

I wouldn't expect the Wolfpack to score 114 points again like they did against NC Central, but this matchup is a total nightmare for UAB.

The Blazers want to play fast and Wade should have a plan to slow them down if they don't turn the ball over. NC State's interior play could completely force the Blazers into scoring from deep. That's not how UAB wants to play, and this will be an absolute blowout if it's decided in the half court.

My Pick: NC State -15.5 (Play to -16.5)
