UConn vs Georgetown College Basketball Betting Preview
UConn Basketball
In a recent preview here at Action Network, I wrote about how Purdue has been excellent this season, but a little under the radar.
You could say the same about UConn.
These Huskies are 17-1, with their lone loss coming to the AP Poll's top-ranked team. Wins over BYU, Illinois, Texas, Kansas, Florida, and Seton Hall have UConn firmly on track for a top seed in March.
Yet, thanks to three unbeaten teams still remaining and the dominant stretches Iowa State and Michigan have had at points this season, UConn has seemed like an afterthought among the country's elite teams.
Don't be fooled. Dan Hurley has another title-contending team on his hands.
UConn is dominant on the defensive end of the floor, forcing tough shots at every level. The twin tower tandem of Tarris Reed Jr. and Eric Reibe is among the best pairs of centers in college hoops.
The biggest development for the team is the growth of freshman Braylon Mullins. The Big East preseason Freshman of the Year missed the first month of the season with an ankle injury, then took a few games to ramp up to his full potential.
In his first seven games, Mullins averaged 9.3 points across 20.3 minutes per game, coming off the bench in his first four appearances. In UConn's past five, Mullins is up to 15 points per game in 32.6 minutes of play. In Big East games, Mullins is hitting 42% from deep, despite a 1-for-7 night against Marquette.
His shooting and expanded aggressiveness open up so many more driving and passing lanes for his teammates. Every role makes a little more sense with Mullins taking on more of the offensive load.
Georgetown Basketball
We're in the third year of Ed Cooley's reign at Georgetown, and the Hoyas' basketball program is still in the wilderness.
Decades ago, this school produced the best teams in the Big East year after year. Now it's been over a decade since Georgetown earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, and the Hoyas haven't seen March's second weekend of play since 2007.
This season's team, like so many recent Georgetown teams, doesn't make much sense. Cooley is starting to bring in talent from both the high school ranks and the transfer portal, though it doesn't show on the floor yet.
Langston Love was a major contributor over the last two years at Baylor, but he's seen erratic playing time as a Hoya this season due to a mix of injury, illness, and Cooley's decision-making. It makes little sense for a productive player like Love to see 16 combined minutes in losses to Dayton, Xavier, and Miami before playing 37 minutes in an overtime loss at Creighton.
That was Georgetown's most recent outing, so maybe Love is finally healthy and showing Cooley he's worthy of a spot on the floor.
That kind of erratic play is found all over this roster.
Arizona transfer KJ Lewis has multiple 25-plus point games, but he also had a three-game stretch with five turnovers per game and a scoreless 14-minute outing at Marquette.
Junior Malik Mack is being relied upon as a primary scoring option, with very mixed results.
These Hoyas don't have a reliable path to scoring. There are no easy buttons on Cooley's clipboard, except for trips to the free throw line. That's not enough to survive in Big East play.
UConn vs. Georgetown Betting Analysis
Everything about this game screams UConn in a blowout.
Georgetown has been sloppy and flat throughout Big East play. The Hoyas finally came out hot against Creighton before blowing a double-digit lead.
It's hard to see this Georgetown team playing a complete game against a top-level team like UConn.
Of course, the idea of an obvious pick being a road team in a conference game raises some concerns.
I'm not necessarily worried about that either. Georgetown's home-court advantage ranks 199th nationally, and the Hoyas are just 6-13 as home underdogs under Cooley.
My Pick: UConn -15 or Better
