Bowling Green Falcons Betting Preview: Few Positives To Be Found

A brief two-game win streak over a reeling Miami Redhawks team and bottom-feeder Sacramento State was all the positive found in this season for Bowling Green.

Since that glimpse, BG has lost each of its last two games in disappointing fashion — the first was on a spectacular overtime loss to Ball State in which the Cardinals tied things up as time expired; the second was to Buffalo despite BG winning the per-play Success Rate battle.

The offense has finally found some rhythm under Greg Nosal (whose hiring I've discussed several times here). The key has been simple: let Jay Kastantin improve and play freely. Play selection has been a bit more intentional with the Division-II transfer, leading to 29.3 points per game over the last four games (compared to 33 total points over its first four). That's opened up the run game a bit more, as well.

But as a trade-off, BG's defense hasn't kept pace. It slipped several times against a terrible Buffalo offense and then crumbled at the end, culminating in a busted coverage as the final seconds ticked off the clock, surrendering the tie and sending the game to overtime.

And there was a second when I believed BG was a team to back, given its positive trajectory. But any wind in the sails of the Falcons was sucked out with that blown lead to Ball State at home.

Eddie George is a loss away from consecutive bowl-less seasons to start here. Attendance and revenue are way up, but on-field success is down. How the athletic staff handles George in the near future will tell us plenty about which of those two things it values most.

Western Michigan Broncos Betting Preview: Still Plowing Through

A successful season so far has been interrupted by three things for Western Michigan:

  1. A controversial ending at Michigan
  2. A blowout loss to G6 Playoff favorite Boise State
  3. A total lapse in defense last week at Toledo

Otherwise, the Broncos have managed to follow up last year's 10-win season with another good year. It wasn't pretty at times for WMU in 2025, which dropped a 21-16 game at Miami (OH) and skated by both Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan. In many ways, 2026 looks similar.

The closeout to this campaign comes with chances at home. WMU hosts Bowling Green this week (130th in consensus power rating), visits Akron (133rd), then hosts Eastern Michigan (125th and descending) and Miami-OH (100th and struggling without QB David McComb). A path to the MAC Championship is definitely still there, though WMU needs some help in losses to Toledo and/or Ohio.

Aside from a rough outing against Boise, Jalen Buckley remains the most dominant force in the MAC. His 637 rushing yards rank second among running backs in the MAC, as do his eight rushing touchdowns. But the offensive line play hasn't been up to last year's standard, and the offense as a whole hasn't found the same explosive rushing potential it had last year.

If you knew Western Michigan last year, you know them again this year. But production is down about 20%, and this team is no longer the conference favorite.

Bowling Green vs Western Michigan Pick, Betting Analysis

It takes a team with more talent at the skill positions than WMU can field to take advantage of the defense. That's what propelled Boise State to the comfortable victory, and it's what won Toledo the game. Remove those two results and WMU's defense has stymied opposing offenses to the tune of 14.3 points per game.

Though an improved unit compared to the beginning of the season, Bowling Green doesn't have those kinds of athletes on its roster. It lacks a true No. 1 option in the backfield, a lethal weapon at tight end, and the field-stretching receiver it's benefited from the past three seasons. Kastantin is forced to make everything happen, and when he doesn't, the offense skids to a halt. The run-first team managed 222 rushing yards combined in its last two games against vulnerable defenses.

WMU fields the MAC's best pass rush. Rush end Scoop Gardner Jr. (35!! pressures) is playing at an All-America level this season and should thrive against BG's permeable offensive line.

But expect the Falcon offense to maintain its pass-first approach now that it's found some success. Though against better competition–competition that's applied the brakes to the worst offenses on its schedule–we can get BG to score at least twice in the first half at an enticing price. Hell, even a touchdown and two-point conversion gets us home here.

It's an inefficiency in a market that likes this to be a low-scoring game and can't tab WMU as less than a two-score favorite. Bowling Green scored 10+ points in each of its last four games (right where that offensive turnaround began), while WMU just surrendered 31 points in a half to Toledo.

Pick: Bowling Green First Half Team Total Over 7.5 Points (Play to 9.5)
