Campbell Fighting Camels Betting Preview: Much Bigger Test
For the first time since 2018, Campbell is off to a 2-0 start. Last week, it defeated Western Carolina 28-19 despite the game being postponed a day. The Camels jumped out to a 28-10 halftime lead and were able to hold on despite not scoring in the second half. They outgained Western Carolina by over 200 yards and limited WCU to a single rushing yard.
In the process, Campbell picked up its second-ever win over a ranked FCS opponent, both of which have come against Western Carolina. It will be looking for another upset this week, but the task will be more difficult as it heads to The Swamp to take on the Gators. It will be the first time that Campbell has ever taken on an SEC opponent.
The Camels will be led by Kamden Sixkiller, who is in his second season as the starter after transferring in from McNeese State. The redshirt junior has thrown for over 300 yards in each of his first two games, but will also need to protect the ball better as he threw three interceptions last week. He is also a threat with his legs, as he leads the team with 114 rushing yards and three touchdowns, matching his total from last season.
Sixkiller's top target this season has been wide receiver Spencer Jones. The 6-foot-5 senior is coming off the first 100-yard game of his career, as he went for seven catches for 126 yards and a touchdown last week. However, Sixkiller does not mind spreading the ball around, as he completed passes to eight different receivers last week, and five Camels have six receptions already this season.
Defensively, AJ Benton is emerging as a leader at linebacker. The sophomore had a career-high eight tackles to go along with a sack and a pass breakup last week. For his efforts, he was named CAA Football Defensive Player of the Week.
Florida Gators Betting Preview: Explosive First Impression
In four seasons as a head coach, Jon Sumrall has won at least nine games in all four years and 11 wins in three of them. While he inherited a solid Tulane program, he engineered a seven-win turnaround in his first season at Troy. Taking over a Florida program starving for success after two winning seasons in the last seven years, another turnaround story would be well received in Gainesville.
The early returns were good as the Gators scored 66 points in the win over Florida Atlantic last week, the sixth-most in the FBS in Week 1. Junior quarterback Aaron Philo showed why offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner made bringing him along from Georgia Tech a priority. He went 16/21 for 275 yards, three touchdowns and an interception while running for another score.
He found Vernell Brown III for six receptions for 117 yards and the first touchdown of his career. Brown should form one of the best wide receiver duos in the SEC with former five-star Dallas Wilson, who had three catches last week himself.
However, the star of the night was running back Jadan Baugh, who went for 160 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries and went over 2,000 rushing yards for his career. After rushing for nearly 1,200 yards last season, Baugh is primed for a big junior season and will make his case to be the first running back selected next spring.
The Gators racked up 624 yards of total offense (343 passing, 281 rushing) and did not punt. Defensively, they forced two turnovers and had three fourth-down stops, but there is still work to be done. Florida Atlantic racked up 396 yards and 25 first downs, leading to 21 points.
Defensive coordinator Brad White felt his defense did not meet the program's standard as they struggled with FAU's tempo at times and added that the unit must find its killer instinct. While you would expect a better defensive performance against an FCS opponent, Sumrall will caution his team against getting complacent: "I just think you have to show up with a chip on your shoulder every day. You can never assume anything. I don't care who you're playing; as soon as you get complacent or overconfident, this game will humble you really, really fast."
Campbell vs Florida Pick, Betting Analysis
One thing I can say with certainty is Baugh will have more than one rushing yard this week. However, his rushing props will not have much value in this matchup, if they are offered at all. However, I do expect him to find the end zone again along with his teammates early and often.
Florida is coming off a 45-point victory and is favored by nearly 50 points this week. The Gators scored 66 points last week and nearly got to this total on their own. Now, they should have similar success this week, and I would expect over 60 points again.
Despite their struggles under Billy Napier, dominating FCS competition was rarely an issue as they scored at least 45 points in each of their last games against FCS opponents. Only one of those games resulted in a shutout, so if the Gators score over 60 points again, seven to 10 points may be all that is needed to get over this total.
